Wings are the one section that trips most people up.

The shape changes direction on you. The fabric wants to pull the wrong way. And if you don’t pattern it correctly before you cut — you’re wasting fabric and starting again.

🪑 In this video I’m going to show you exactly how I tackle a troublesome wing — the same method I’ve used for 35 years on chairs that would beat most people.

No guessing. No pulling it tight and hoping. Just a clean, methodical approach that works every time.

This is how you pattern a wing properly. 👇 🔗 Full course at LearnSlipcovers.com

🪑 In this video, I’m showing you exactly how I pattern slipcovers — the same proven approach I’ve used for over 35 years, from small armchairs all the way to full corner sofas.
No guesswork.
No wasted fabric.
No cutting it wrong and having to fit it twice.
You start by truly understanding the shape and what each panel needs to do. Then you cut with confidence — not hope.
This is patterning simplified.

With the tuckins sorted, we’re ready to move forward. 🪑

In Episode 4 we’re pushing on to the front of the seat — and this is where things start to take real shape.

Once your tuckins are sitting right, your attention moves to the front edge. Most upholstered seats have a raised front section, and that height change is where a lot of beginners get caught out. The fabric wants to do its own thing — and your job is to control it.

We focus on the front T shape. That junction where the seat meets the front border is one of the most important points on the whole chair. Get it wrong and the cover will pull, pucker, or sit awkwardly. Get it right and everything flows.

To lose the excess fabric at that point cleanly, we’re putting in a dart or a tuck — whichever suits the chair. This isn’t guesswork. There’s a method to it, and once you’ve done it once you’ll use it every time.

From there we’re set up and ready to apply the side seat facing — which is exactly where Episode 5 picks up. ✂️

Now we build on it. 🧵 In Episode 1 we broke down the inside back shape. Now we’re taking that further — refining the seat pattern, checking our lines, and making sure everything is sitting exactly where it should be. This is the stage where most beginners either rush or second-guess themselves. Don’t. Work the fabric. Trust the process. Getting your seat right isn’t just about that one piece — it sets up everything that comes after it. Get this stage dialled in and the rest of the chair starts to fall into place. 35 years of doing this has taught me one thing — slow and right beats fast and wrong every time. ✂️ 🔗 Full course at LearnSlipcovers.com

Can slipcovers really be this easy ? They can if you follow my pattern skills!
Slipcovers are dying… and that’s your golden opportunity.
Most upholsterers won’t touch them anymore. Too fiddly, they say.
But demand? Steady and growing — people want affordable refreshes for tired furniture.
My students started from scratch and now charge premium prices (£500–£1,000+) per sofa, working from their dining room table. No advertising, just word-of-mouth and happy clients.

Frustrated trying to find someone to make a proper slipcover?
I get it. Search upholsterers — plenty exist, but slipcover specialists? Almost none. Most politely decline.
That leaves a massive untapped market. Homeowners need fresh sofa looks without the cost of new furniture or full reupholstery.
My students are stepping in and charging £700–£1,000+ per job, working comfortably from home. No fancy setup needed.
