If you’ve been curious about trying Stain & Finishing Oil in Ebony, this one’s for you.

I’ve been working on this piece using Ebony SFO and filmed a little video along the way showing just how simple it is to use, plus a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years.

One of the things I love most about SFO is how easy it is to use. You can completely transform tired wood while still letting all that lovely grain and character shine through. Ebony gives such a rich, dramatic finish!

It’s one of those products that looks really impressive but is actually incredibly easy to work with once you get going.

And yes… it’s always slightly terrifying when the wood first goes dark. Trust the process. Its beautifully.

A little while ago, I shared this incredible old Rivington cocktail cabinet and the story behind it. The grandson, Maurice of the original Rivington furniture company got in touch with me to source and restore a piece connected to his family history. The original factory was based on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, right in the heart of London’s historic furniture trade.

What I completely forgot to share was the ending to the story.

When he and his wife saw the finished cabinet, they were absolutely overjoyed. And now apparently their son and granddaughter are already fighting over who gets to inherit it in the future.

How amazing is that?

To think this cabinet could end up passing through five generations of the same family after all these years honestly blows my mind a bit.

This piece became a pure labour of love. I even managed to track down a book for them called Behind the Veneer, all about Shoreditch and the East London furniture trade that once dominated the area from the late 1700s right through to the mid-1900s.

It’s fascinating to think that the same streets now known for hipster shops, graffiti art and creative studios were once packed with cabinet makers, French polishers, veneer specialists, timber yards and furniture workshops.

And I think that’s why I love restoring furniture so much.

I genuinely believe that to restore or reinvent old furniture properly, you need to understand where it came from first. Who made it. Why it was built. What was happening in that era. The craftsmanship matters. The people behind it matter.

Even when a piece is being transformed for modern living, I never want to lose sight of the story attached to it.

Projects like this are why I’ll never get bored of what I do.

And yes… apparently I now go full BBC documentary researcher when I restore furniture.

I’ve come all the way to Grand Designs to work on the “Ask the Experts” stand… feeling all professional and ready to go.

First two appointments? Absolute no-shows. Strong start.

But honestly, not even bothered because I ended up meeting Kevin McCloud instead.

So yeah… I’d say that’s a win. Made my day.

Less than ONE WEEK until I’m at Grand Designs Live in London… which feels slightly mad.

I’ll be there as one of the “Ask the Expert” panel (still not over that bit), talking all things furniture, upcycling and of course Fusion Mineral Paint.

If you’re heading to the show and fancy picking my brain about a project, bring photos, bring questions, bring the chaos.

I’ve got a limited number of FREE tickets, so if you want one, just message me and I’ll send you the link.

And if you book in for a proper chat with me on the day, you’ll also get a free Fusion Mineral Paint sample and a True Colour Card to take away with you.

Also… whoever books the last appointment of the day is now contractually obliged to bring me a glass of wine. I don’t make the rules.

Come and say hi, it’d be lovely to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones too.

I’ve been playing around with something a bit different…

It started with a few photos of flowers and floral arrangements I loved, and then I started experimenting with turning them into kaleidoscope-style patterns.

And now it’s turned into this.

I’m genuinely toying with the idea of having one of these made into an actual fabric. Think rich, sumptuous velvet. Bold, a bit dramatic, definitely not subtle.

So naturally, I had to mock it up on my (still unsold… honestly 🤷‍♀️) Ercol day bed to see what it could look like in real life.

Now I’m stuck somewhere between “this is amazing” and “have I completely lost the plot?”

So I need your help…

Should I do it?

And if yes, which of these designs would you want to see made into fabric?

Right, this is a bit exciting…

I’m going to be at Grand Designs Live London as one of their “Ask the Expert”🤣 for a day. I’ll be in the interior design section, chatting all things paint, upcycling, and how to make your pieces look bloody brilliant without chucking them out.

I’m only there Saturday 2nd May so it’s a one-day-only situation.

Here’s the good bit…

If you book a slot to come and see me:
• You’ll get a free ticket to the show
• A Fusion Mineral Paint real colour card
• And a sample to take away and play with

So if you’ve got a project in mind, something you’ve started and now regret, or you’re just stuck staring at a piece thinking “what the hell do I do with this?”… bring it along.

Or honestly, just come for a chat. Coffee, wine, a bit of brainstorming. I’m not fussy.

Come meet your Fusion Mineral Paint and upcycling expert in real life and let’s figure it out together.

Links to book your spot and grab your ticket are in the comments.

Can’t wait to see you there 🙏❤️

Right, I didn’t expect to love this one as much as I do…

I’ve painted a fair few of these cocktail cabinets over time, and always in greens. Manor Green, Manor Green mixed with Coal Black and more as it just works.

But this time I fancied a change.

Enter midnight blue… and honestly, I think this might be my favourite yet. It’s got that same depth and richness you get from a dark green, but with a slightly more refined, almost inky feel to it. It shifts beautifully in the light and feels a bit more unexpected.

And then you open it up…

That hit of burnt orange velvet inside the drawers just lifts the whole thing. It’s bold, a bit indulgent, and pairs ridiculously well with the dark exterior. One of those combinations you wouldn’t necessarily plan, but when you see it, you just know it works.

It’s still got that classic cocktail cabinet vibe, just with a slightly different twist this time.

What do you reckon… are you team green, or does this midnight blue win you over?

This one was a bit of a team effort…

I worked my magic on this Ercol style chair, and then passed it over to the lovely lot at FabriFix to create the cushion. And honestly… they nailed it.

Because as much as I like to think I can do everything, some things are best left to the pros. And having good people in your corner who you trust to bring it all together? That’s everything in this business.

It’s not just about the paint, it’s about the finish, the fabric, the whole feel of the piece… and this one just works.

Give them a follow and some love when I tag them, they’ve done a cracking job on this one.

What do you think, would you have this in your home?
