From a magazine photograph to a completely new entrance.

The client came to us with a single image of a four-column portico and asked us to use it as the inspiration for the front of their home.

From there, we handled the complete process; developing the design, working through the structural engineering, manufacturing every component from Semi-Rijo Portuguese limestone, and finally installing the finished portico on site.

With something of this scale, there's a lot happening behind what you eventually see. Every column, capital, base and section of stone has to be accurately produced, while the structure itself needs to work as one complete engineered system.

Creating a chipped edge finish on Jura Blue-Grey limestone.

Rather than leaving a perfectly straight edge, the stonemason works along it by hand, deliberately chipping away small sections of stone to create a more irregular, rustic appearance.

As Simon explains, it's a finish some clients specifically ask for because it takes away the precision of a machine-cut edge and gives the stone a more traditional, natural character.

The technique is particularly well suited to harder natural stones such as granite and dense limestones like Jura, although it can also be used on softer limestones.

The important part is controlling something that's intentionally meant to look uncontrolled.

Giving an existing dining table a new lease of life.

Rather than replacing the whole table, Simon kept the original base and replaced the existing top with a piece of natural stone, cut and finished in the workshop to fit.

It's a simple way of completely changing the look and feel of a piece of furniture while making use of what's already there.

And when you work with stone every day, choosing a new table top becomes a little more interesting.

There are many different types available, each with its own colour, texture and character. Depending on where it's quarried and how it's finished, slate can range from deep blacks and greys through to greens, purples and warmer tones.

The surface can vary considerably too, from a clean honed finish to the more textured natural riven finish created as the stone is split along its natural layers.

It's a good reminder that stone can be far more than worktops, fireplaces and staircases. In the right hands, the same raw material can be carved and shaped into something entirely different.

This Arabescato Gold kitchen worktop has been manufactured in our workshop and is being carefully loaded onto the truck ready for its journey north.

This counter-top has a recessed drainer AND draining grooves, which makes it highly functional.

It's a relatively small detail in the overall kitchen, but one that requires precision to get right and makes a real difference in everyday use.

Some pieces of stone come with a story.

This sculpture has been sitting in our factory for many years. It was created by sculptor David Warburton and, at one point, was destined for the bin.

Simon couldn't quite let that happen, so he rescued it—and it's been part of the workshop ever since.

When you spend your life working with stone, it's difficult to see a piece of craftsmanship like this simply thrown away.
