Fallen Giants

Fallen Giants We design and make enduring contemporary furniture from found wooden objects. Every piece of wood ha How do we do this? Why do we use reclaimed wood?

We take found wooden objects and figure out ways to repurpose the timber into enduring contemporary furniture designs. We believe every piece of wood has a potential use, and finding that use is our job. In doing so, we aim to encourage a shift towards more thoughtful consumption, reduce waste and in the process make furniture that tells a story. The best quality wood comes from old trees. As thes

e are, quite rightly, often protected this material is no longer readily available in today’s timber yards. Therefore, the only reliable source of beautiful old growth timber is to use reclaimed materials. As reclaimed wood tends to be older it is more stable and results in stronger furniture pieces. We also enjoy making intriguing features of reclaimed timber’s ‘imperfections’ such as cracks, screw holes and saw cuts. Also, of course, you don’t have to cut down any more trees to harvest reclaimed timber – which is always a good thing. I’m Johnny Tyson, owner and chief maker at Fallen Giants. I’ve always loved making things and reusing found objects. Before Fallen Giants, I worked as graphic designer and then trained as a wooden boat builder. Rowing my boat out to sea is still one of my proudest moments. Several years ago, while working for a company producing designer kitchens, I learned the techniques of cabinet making but was appalled by the waste involved. At the same time, I became interested in how wood can tell a story; of how it grows, how it has been used and how this can give the maker new ideas for what it can be made into. I started collecting discarded wood and started to make my own furniture from it. Friends and family began asking me to make similar furniture for them and the idea for Fallen Giants was formed. I now have my own workshop in Sheffield, where I live with my wife and daughter.

Scroll to go back in time…. I’ve been taking part in Open Up Sheffield since 2018.

A Fallen Giants Open Up tradition is for to insist on taking the same photo at the workshop door. Celebrating the fact that I managed to get the space sorted enough to open the doors.

Another tradition, which happened last weekend, is at some point someone will walk in and say “We had no idea you were even here…” Which is a reminder as to why I love doing this event. It’s great to meet new people, even after all this time.

In fact, almost as amazing as it is to see the people who have continued to support Fallen Giants since 2018.

The doors are open again this weekend. It would be great to see you.

From a storm damaged ash to a kitchen chopping block. Joined, planed, sanded through the grits until it’s nice a smooth. Then mineral oil to finish. Very satisfying.

More demos tomorrow at the workshop. Any leftover chopping blocks will be available on the website after the show.

Open tomorrow, 11am–4pm, Unit 6, Harland Works, 70 John Street, Sheffield.

This weekend is a chance to see behind the scenes of what it takes to make our work. Pop in to chat to us about commissions, customised pieces and restorations.

If you can’t make it - check out Open Up Studios and our NEW website via the link in bio.

I’ll often start with an idea. This time it’s a six seater dining table. Then I’ll go and find the wood that inspires the design from there.

Come and see where this one ends up. Open Up Sheffield, 2–4 and 9-10 May at Harland Works. Link in bio.

“I poke my way through the valley of fallen giants, finding here and there fragments which will be given a second life.” George Nakashima, Woodworker.

Fallen Giants was named after this quote by one of my woodworking heroes. A walk through Wyming Brook today provided some inspiration and a close-up reminder of the reality of managing woodlands and forests.

Nice to be out after so much rain, though and the river was pumping. Where did you make it to this weekend?
