It’s been so long since I posted I had to think for a second about how to actually add a reel! This is just a clip of how I attach this beautiful braid to some interlined curtains. There is no trick, it’s just hand sewn, which means it sits perfectly flat, and the braid is not ruined by machine stitches showing through.

I get so carried away when a fun project comes in that I so often forget to take “before” photos, and this is no exception. Luckily I had a snapshot of the back of this lovely little vintage button back. It was covered in a very on trend chintz, but after decades of use, it needed a bit of a freshen up. Dressed in her new helter-skelter linen, complete with a fun little skirt, this chair is ready for the next 30 years of love and use.

I often get asked how the back of a chair is finished without seeing any staples, nails or stitches. In mass production gripper strips are often used, but in bespoke upholstery it’s just a case of slip stitching by hand. The fabric is pinned into place to get the tension right, then it’s just a case of slowly stitching up the edges using a curved needle and lots of patience. Quite a satisfying end step in bespoke upholstery

I loved making this blind from gorgeous fabric. A real benefit of buying from a smaller fabric house is that the fabric is often printed to order, to the exact length required, resulting in far less waste. The finished blind was sent up to a client in Yorkshire so sadly I didn’t have photos of it installed, but loved the fabric so much, and it was too good not to share!

This summer has been blissfully quieter than usual, which has given me time to spend with the children and an opportunity to finally make my own curtains, nine months after moving house! I chose this gorgeous fern print, on a linen union base cloth which has a tiny bit of Tencel added. It makes such a difference to the creasing which is a bit of a feature with pure linen.

September is already looking busy, and the pre Christmas rush will soon be upon us, so if you are looking for any soft furnishings or upholstery projects to be completed before the end of the year please do get in touch asap!

I absolutely loved this project, my client has such gorgeous taste, and picked the fabric for the headboard and stool to match perfectly with the gorgeous cushions and throw that she already had. The height of the headboard really added a touch of drama.

Contrast piping along the bottom edge of a Roman blind can really lift a simple pattern and add a wonderful finishing touch. I’m looking forward to seeing these up, with a headboard and stool which I’ve upholstered to match in the same colour way.

Double v triple!!! 🤔

I often get asked which type of pleat is the right one to go for, and generally I would almost always go for triple. However, there are a few instances where double gets the win 🥇

1. Where a tight stack is important, double pleats take up less space when they are opened, or stacked. This works well if the window or door is in a tight alcove for example.

2. If fabric is tight, double is an option as it requires slightly less fabric, around 2.25 “fullness ration verses 2.5 for triple pleats. It means you could round down to the nearest width, which reduces the cost quite significantly.

3. As shown here, when a curtain is in a bay, and hung from a track, the gaps between the pleats will be pushed forward as the track will be in the way so they can’t go backwards as they would when hanging from a pole. If you have a triple pleat, the actual pleat doesn’t stick out as far, so would be hidden when the curtains are open. In this instance, I calculate the pleats and gaps to ensure that the gaps don’t become the dominant feature when they are opened curtains are open. (👀 see third pic 👉)

I still much prefer the look of a traditional triple pleat, but sometimes the double is the best option

These cheerful Romans are heading to London today. They have been made for a private members club, so the fabulous fabric has been treated with fire retardant spray to comply with the regulations for hotels, and fire retardant interlining and lining have been used. Because they will get more wear and tear than domestic blinds, they have heavy duty blind rails, and we have squeezed the maximum number of spools possible into the cassettes to give extra lifting power 💪 (as shown in the second pic!)

A little behind the scenes demo of how our Roman blinds are stitched together. There are three layers in each, the top fabric, a bonded interlining, (where a lining and interlining are glued together, which makes it quite rigid and helps keep the shape of the blind, in this case it is blackout bonded interlining) then the lining which has the rod pockets stitched in.

The interlining is firstly stitched to the face fabric using this locking stitch, then the lining is stitched on in the same way with the stiches going over the first set. It means that there is no visible stitching on the face of the blind, and each layer is firmly stitched together along the rod pockets, resulting in a perfectly straight, even blind. It takes time, but is so worth it!
