The more we think about soil health and storing carbon the more we realise that cows can be the solution when done in the right way. We’re arable farmers building nutrition for a cropping rotation of wheat, peas, oats etc but we can’t get away from the fact that if we till we upset soil structure and dynamics. If we adaptively graze, mimicking the co-evolution of herbivores alongside grasslands we rapidly store tonne upon tonne of carbon, balancing the soil ecosystem. Thanks to and for the guidance and to Speedy for letting me spend time with your cows.

‘Engaged’ Steward and all round legend Xan getting licked. It is a real privilege to share our farm with people like Xan. Everyone eats, and so everyone has an interest in food, but our stewards are really beginning to get into the finer details, asking difficult questions around the systems that define the way farmers farm, and learning that not everything is as it seems on the surface. For instance a cows lick is not as smooth, and tender as you might expect. Follow links to and to get licked too.

YQ wheat from is all coming into ear, as well as Retour population from . This is our first time growing populations and they are looking very well indeed! We have trialled various older wheat varieties which tend to be taller and root deeply. This allows them to compete against weeds and to find nutrients and moisture far better than modern varieties, which are designed to be fed from above by a fertiliser spreader and protected from competition by herbicides. But the particular benefit of the polyculture seems to be resilience against leaf fungi. Getting excited for harvest already!

Wild Rogues - the heart of summer at Rushmere. Long, bright days outside with good people. You don’t need to come for the whole week; come for a day or just come for an evening. If you volunteer, the evening meals and music are included in the daily or weekly price. If not, you can book in just for the evening events.

Days close to the soil: rogueing oats, milling wheat, working the market garden, exploring the woods. We’ll be out with the Rangers, learning wildflowers and birds, talking habitat and conservation, we’ll follow wheat in the field to fresh bread, and create a vision for the future of small farms like Rushmere with workshops and thought provoking discussions with . Every day will be warmed up and wound down with and we’ll learn from and eat the freshest, lushest and most delicious organic food you can imagine from .market.garden. In between, there’s space to talk, think, and meet people.

We were so inspired last year by the kindness of people, and the support from our little community, so if this feels like something you could get on board with we would love to have you. You can book through the links in our bio. We have already had a greater than expected number of bookings particularly for the Thursday when is playing so don’t wait too long.

A significant birthday for our great pal , sculptor, maker, mover and shaker . Fired up the new bbq, surrounded by bluebells, Annabel’s and good smells, giving the magical canopy its first run of the season. A real treat to be able to do this for our friend who has put so much kindness and effort into moving to our little community so far from home.
