Cleaned up and ready for service!

I've been reorganising my workshop recently and found these two rather sad and neglected planes I'd forgotten about. Not sure where they came from ๐Ÿค” From time to time friends say "here you go, I found this in Granddad's shed...". Anyway, their soles are now flat, handles polished, irons sharpened...oiled up and ready to go! It's always satisfying saving a tool from the scrapheap!

My uncle asked for some of my grandparents old photos. Anyone who has ever tried to remove a photo from one of those old adhesive albums, knows how difficult it can be to do without tearing! So a perfect opportunity to finally try out the hot air pencil that came with my heated spatula, a brilliant bit of kit from . The gentle flow of warm air is just enough to soften the adhesive to allow the photo to be removed undamaged. Maybe one day I'll finally get around to sorting the Hutt family archives๐Ÿ™ˆ

Preparing a nice little bedroom chair for re-caning next week. I like to do glue-ups on a Friday when I can, so that they can be left clamped up over the weekend.

The seat on this one had been caned in a "single Victoria" pattern (of sorts) though the last weaver evidently couldn't make up their mind whether to go under or over whilst weaving the diagonals ๐Ÿคจ

As the chair is in heavy use by the owner, it will be caned in the more common, and much stronger, 6-way weave.

A very enjoyable day teaching caning. Well done to Tamsin for completing her first panel!

Haven't posted in a long time,๐Ÿ™ˆ so thought I'd kickoff with this very nice early 19th century folding tea table that I'm currently working on.

There is some veneer loss to the base and several areas of "bubbling" along the upper frame as a result of the original glue drying out. The great advantage of traditional, protein based, adhesives is that they can be reactivated with heat and moisture. In order to consolidate the lifting veneer I first introduced some hot water before massaging the surface with fresh hide glue. I then washed off the excess glue and clamped a heated block of MDF over the area to flatten the veneer.

A Nice Victorian Iron back in for reupholstery. The iron frame has been bound in Hessian and a base layer of Hessian hand stitched into position ready for the first stuffing. Nice chairs to work on, but very time consuming because of the amount of sewing involved.

Nice retro piece in the workshop at the moment. A 1950s/60s sewing box with atomic legs and ebonised tambour top.
After years of storage in a shed, the carcase had come apart and the tambour was broken and held together with tape. My first job was to remove the worn lining. I began by applying a poultice of tissue paper and methylated spirit to soften the old glue. After cleaning up each of the 42 individual pieces I was ready to reassemble. I knocked up a very simple jig to ensure the pieces were kept flat and square before applying the new lining with hide glue. I can't wait to reassemble the box to see how it rolls!

Nice job little job, conserving/restoring the inside of this Victorian trumpet table. The lining paper was delaminating in several places and in need of consolidation. Two of of the sections dividing the individual compartments were missing and all but the central compartment lid had been lost over the years. There was also section of moulding missing on the outside edge beneath the lid. Now returned to its original state without over restoring.

"Stupendous and beyond all description...the incomparable carving of our Gibbons...the greatest master...that the world ever had in any age". John Evelyn(1620-1706)

A rare trip away from the workshop today to visit the Grinling Gibbons exhibition at Bonhams, New Bond St, London. I was privileged to work with a team conserving some of his work at Trinity College Oxford in 2016, so welcomed the chance to see some more work by the "Michelangelo of wood". Anybody that appreciates craftsmanship in the truest sense should pay a visit to the exhibition.

Test fitting the replacement sections of cornice moulding. The ends had been squared off when the piece was converted, so I had to make the moulding in two sections to recreate the mitre joint.
