In October 2008, from an empty warehouse – the WorkBack pilot was established, to test the concept of sustainable office furniture reuse, refurbishment and recycling. WorkBack office furniture, working in partnership with SpringBack ICT Recycling, which uplifts ICT equipment from SME’s and other organisation such as Universities, Hospitals and NHS Boards and is now an integral part of the SpringBa
ck Group. The projects contribute to the Group’s aim of providing employment and quality training opportunities (we are an accredited SQA Training Centre, delivering Scottish Vocational Qualifications) to young people who would ordinarily face significant barriers to employment. WorkBack was awarded INCREASE III funding from the Scottish Government through the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) in February 2009 to operate a three year pilot based on the waste hierarchy of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”
Since the project start up we have created five permanent jobs with over fifty trainees spending time on the project. We have developed our own bespoke SVQ in recycling which our trainees complete during the time they are with the organisation. So far, WorkBack has saved over 400 Ton of Office Furniture from going to landfill, some of it was recycled, some was given a new home and others were used in various training projects.
