As this year draws to a close, I find myself embracing a whirlwind of experiences—some challenging, others profoundly rewarding. Reflecting back, I’m immensely grateful for the diverse array of projects that have broadened my horizons and allowed me to explore new territories, infusing each day with a touch of adventure and joy.

One of the most fulfilling aspects has been supporting and collaborating with exceptionally talented architects, interior designers, and craftspeople. Many of these relationships have blossomed into cherished friendships, adding depth and warmth to this journey.

Among the highlights, being a part of the creative process at Hetty’s Place in Gloucester stands out vividly. Witnessing Hetty and the team craft a space that resonates with people, fostering genuine delight in all who visit, remains a truly cherished memory.

Yet, amidst these professional endeavors, the greatest source of gratitude stems from watching my little boy grow each day. Striking a harmonious balance between work and family has presented its challenges, but being an active part in the early parts of his life is always a privilege. I deeply appreciate the understanding and support from those I work with as I navigate this unique blend of work and childcare—a topic that often sparks meaningful discussions.

Looking ahead, the future is brimming with exciting new development projects, each holding promises of growth and innovation. I can’t wait to share these in the upcoming year.

As this chapter gently closes, I extend heartfelt wishes for a serene and joyous Christmas to all.

Every step of the process is considered.

Considered thought means meticulously planning the functionality of the cabinetry. Each component is designed to enhance convenience and efficiency, whether it’s custom shelving for specific items, integrated lighting, or concealed storage solutions. The design is refined to eliminate unnecessary complexities and optimise usability.

Our homes are more than just a collection of walls, floors, and ceilings. They are living spaces that reflect our personalities, experiences, and aspirations. Every element within our homes, from the furniture to the architectural design, contributes to the overall ambiance and functionality. By appreciatingting and understanding the forms in our homes, we can create spaces that are comforting, welcoming and homely.

One way to appreciate the forms in your home is through bespoke design. Bespoke-made furniture and joinery allow you to tailor every aspect to your liking. The beauty lies in the intricate details and craftsmanship that breathe life into these pieces. From the graceful curves of a handmade chair to the meticulously designed shelving unit, bespoke cabinetry enhance both aesthetics and functionality.

With a decade of bespoke kitchens and cabinetry experience, I’m here to support your creative journey. Let’s push boundaries, discover exciting possibilities, and foster long-term relationships. I empower craftspeople, makers, and interior designers with digital modeling, drawings, and manufacturing support. Whether it’s a small project or a full house renovation, I offer consultancy, design to manufacture services, presentation documents, manufacturing drawings, and CNC support. Let’s chat to discuss your needs and how I can assist you.

Imagine the playful dance of shadows, gracefully prancing across your walls, their ballet bringing joy to your space. Picture the warm embrace of summer light, casting its golden glow at the end of the day, inviting you to reflect and find solace in the gentle whispers of dusk.

It is in these unexpected moments of natural spectacle that the true marvel of lighting reveals itself, reminding us of the beauty that emerges when design embraces the serendipity of real life.

Ive started reading.

Or rather I’ve started rereading design theories, beginning with “The Eyes of the Skin” by Juhanai Pallasmaa.

Pallasmaa argues that architecture should be experienced holistically, engaging not only the visual sense but also other sensory and bodily experiences. He emphasises the significance of tactile and haptic qualities in architecture, suggesting that our perception of space should extend beyond what is seen with the eyes alone.

There are a few points I thought I’d pull out that work just as well for joinery and cabinetry design:

1. Tactile Delight: consider the tactile qualities that invite interaction. Incorporating textures, whether through carefully chosen materials or thoughtful surface treatments, provides a sensory delight that enhances the user experience.

2. Material Authenticity: By selecting natural and honest materials, we can evoke emotional responses and establish a deeper connection between the user and the piece.

3. Proportions and Human Scale: Pallasmaa highlights the importance of creating pieces that resonate with our embodied experiences. By considering ergonomics, ensuring comfortable heights, and providing intuitive functionality, we can design furniture that complements the human form and invites a sense of harmony.

4. Spatial Composition: Joinery, cabinetry, and furniture design are not isolated entities but integral parts of the larger architectural space. Similar to architecture, these elements can contribute to the spatial composition. By carefully considering their placement, proportion, and relationship to the surrounding environment, we create a cohesive and harmonious spatial experience that envelops the user.

We have the opportunity to go beyond the visual and engage the senses holistically. By understanding the theories in "The Eyes of the Skin," we can create furniture that not only pleases the eye but also invites touch, stimulates emotions, and establishes a profound connection between the user and the piece. Through sensory design, we craft furniture that transcends the functional and becomes a multisensory experience, enriching our lives and spaces.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently.

Slowing down, taking a breath.

I’ve been reading up a lot recently on slow design.

Slow design is an emerging movement in the world of design that advocates for a more thoughtful, sustainable, and mindful approach to creating products and spaces. It aims to counter the negative effects of fast consumerism, emphasising quality over quantity and encouraging a deeper connection between people and the objects they possess.

In recent years, slow design has gained significant popularity as individuals and designers alike seek alternatives to the disposable, mass-produced items that dominate our consumer culture. People are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their choices and are actively seeking out products that align with their values.

One of the key drivers behind the popularity of slow design is the desire for more meaningful and lasting experiences. In a world saturated with fleeting trends, people are increasingly drawn to products that possess a sense of timelessness, durability, and craftsmanship. Slow design embraces these values by emphasising the use of high-quality materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and attention to detail.
