Cocooning colours for autumn – wrap yourself up in rich, enveloping tones inspired by nature.

As the season shifts towards colder, darker months, embrace comforting colours that help spaces feel warm, grounded and cocooning.

Deep burgundy and luscious greens bring a bold sense of luxury to both homes and gardens, while rich truffle browns will provide a calm, earthy foundation. Think of Whortleberry, Yew Green, Field Green, and Ottery Brown as ideal autumnal paint colours.

Dark teal blues like Avalon Blue are perfect for creating sophisticated, soothing schemes, with rustic dusty pinks such as Rock Rose adding a softer, more relaxed contrast.

Not sure what brush to use for your wood paint project? Choosing the right brush will make life so much easier and leave you with a great finish. Below are some simple tips to help you achieve the perfect paint finish.

For water-based paints like ours, a good quality synthetic brush works best.

We specifically suggest a good quality brush as they hold the paint really well and give a lovely smooth finish. You also tend to get minimal bristle loss, so you won’t be endlessly picking bristles out of your paint and be left with a bald brush at the end.

A good quality brush can last a lifetime if you look after them by cleaning thoroughly after use while the paint is still wet. A spot of washing-up liquid can help get rid of dried paint on bristles.

Don’t use a tiny brush! We see it a lot on social media and some TV programmes and it drives me mad. It would take hours and look really scrappy and patchy.

Use the right size brush head for the job. Simple rule is to use a brush head about the same width as the piece of wood you’re working on.

½, ¾, and 1 inch brushes are great for small detail work, fiddly woodwork like spindles, and cutting in

1½, 2 inch, 2½ and 3 inch brushes are perfect for larger surface areas. I find using larger brushes than that can hold too much paint in the head and become a bit unwieldy to control.

For rough sawn wood like some fence panels you should use a fence paint brush as they’re designed to deal with the rough surface that can tear and damage other paint brushes.

Now I can go properly potty in the garden and Marshland Green was the winning colour for me! The deep green with teal blue depths is a gorgeous colour straight from nature and inspired by the many wetlands in Somerset. It contrasts beautifully with the Green Ore wood paint on the greenhouse that it will stand next to and suits the roof top veg garden that it sits within.

I painted it upside down first as it makes painting so much easier rather than having to paint for hours upside down! Our wood paint dries quickly in warm/hot dry weather so by the time I’d finished the first coat it was ready to paint on the second.

Don’t forget to paint the feet as cut ends soak up water and they’ll be sat on the ground in water every time it rains. By painting them you’ll seal them and protect the legs from damage.

Once that second coat was dry I flipped it up the right way and painted two coats on the rest of the potting bench from

I had a quarter of a 750ml tin of paint left so painted a 3rd coat on the horizontal surfaces of the shelves to give them added protection against wear and tear and the elements. Horizontal surfaces always wear a lot quicker than verticals so always pop on a 3rd or 4th coat if you can and they’ll last a lot longer before a maintenance coat is required.

I left the paint to cure and fully harden overnight before putting tools on, ready to get potting.

Now all I need is for to come and slap my compost bag – not a euphemism (or is it?!) 🤣

I struggled all growing season potting up seed trays and potting on seedlings on the floor before I got this fabulous potting bench from

It was really easy to build, a lovely design with two shelves and made using pressure-treated timber so it’s protected against rot and insect attack.

I need to pop some wood paint on to protect it from the rain but am stuck on choice.

What colour would you paint it? You can use UV Clear Wood Paint to protect it and keep the natural timber look but I really want to use a coloured paint.

I’m trying to decide from Rock Rose, Meadowsweet Cream, Marshland Green or Ottery Brown as I love all of these colours and they’d contrast nicely with the Green Ore on my greenhouse – help!!

August Bank Holiday Delivery Dates 🚚
We will be closed and the couriers taking a break on the Summer Bank Holiday Monday 31st August. If you'd like to be painting over the long weekend, we have recommended order dates below to make sure you get your order in time.

POSTAL DELIVERIES
As standard all craft packs, 40ml and 150ml paint tin orders are despatched using Royal Mail's 48hr Tracked Small Parcels Service. Parcels are collected by Royal Mail the morning after you've placed your order so if you order on a Monday, the post-person will collect Tuesday morning, then it should be delivered Thursday or Friday.

Place your order by 4pm Monday 24th August or the week before to play extra safe.

COURIER DELIVERIES
All of our paint tin orders of 750ml and larger are sent by courier on a specialist next day liquid service, so you can place your paint order by 12pm Thursday 27th August for delivery the next day on Friday 28th August. Placing your order before this date will allow extra time for any possible hold-ups or delays in the courier system.

Not sure what tool to use? The best tool to use depends on the type of paint you’re using and the painting project. With most paints you can use a paint brush, roller or sprayer to apply them.

Each tool has their advantages and disadvantages and are dependent on what you’re doing, for example if you’re painting a large wall or fiddly trellis a sprayer may make life easier. If you’re using an oil-based paint it’s recommended to use a natural bristle brush and you’ll need to use a chemical paint cleaner, whereas with a water-based paint a synthetic brush works best and you can just clean tools with water.

Is your conservatory like a oven on full heat? Well Peelable Glass Paint may be the solution for you!

Originally designed as a greenhouse shading paint that reduces the internal temperature and provides shading for plants, it’s also really effective at reducing the temperature in conservatories and providing shade.

“I thought you might be interested in some pictures of my conservatory roof.

With the very hot weather recently it was like an oven inside. I put a white plastic tarpaulin over the top which made a considerable difference, but looked awful.

So I thought I would try your translucent White Witch paint.

I found, using a small foam roller worked best, putting on 4 thin coats, this gave the best even appearance. I put it on the inside as this was easier and safer, though maybe it would have been more effective outside. However the heat reduction is good, and I am very happy with the result. As you can see from the attached pictures, the coverage is fairly even, and from outside is barely visible. I wanted a neat appearance as I intend to leave it for some time.

It reduces the sun’s glare, but not the light available, certainly brighter than the tarpaulin. It also has the benefit of making the room lighter at night as it reflects the light back into the room.

And it was certainly far cheaper than replacing the roof with different panels which so many companies are currently advertising.”
