Table Top Andon Lamp

Following on from my last post, here's another Andon Lamp. This time in Ash and basswood, it's around a third of the size of the floor standing version.

My take on the traditional Japanese Andon Lamp. Featuring hand cut Kumiko, and some nice gold and silver leaf washi paper.

The Heathside Lamp
The lampstand is made from American Cherry and utilises steam bending for it's final form. An elegant and timeless design it was commissioned by a client in Surrey. They asked for a contemporary piece of lighting and I was given free rein with the design. The shade uses Japanese Washi Paper with embedded gold and silver leaf for interest whether on or off. Had a good weekend selling my wares . Great to speak with so many people about my work. I’ve a couple of coffee tables that didn’t sell and are still looking for a new home, message me if you’re interested. I’ll also be adding a few new items to my website this week, just in time for Christmas.

It's the fifth and final day of Find a Maker Week, and the chance to highlight my favourite makers in the Find a Maker Directory. It wasn't an easy task as there are so many fantastic makers there.
In no particular order:

Thursday: Inspiration
I draw a lot of inspiration from Shaker furniture (as you can see from my book shelf). Their pieces have an elegant simplicity where form follows function. They created an enduring legacy that has inspired many other designers, including Danish mid-century, and continues to this day.

Wednesday: Behind the Scenes
I always forget to take WiP photos but remembered for my latest commission (photos coming soon) for a floor standing lamp.
1) Sketch of initial concept.
2) Steam bending aparatus.
3) Main component in the bending jig (some changes to make for next time).
4) Shaping by hand.
5) Glue up in stages.
6) Mock up and testing, this revealed the need for an increased counterweight.
7) Lampshade making and electrical testing.
8) Packaged ready for dispatch with the courier.

Hopefully that has given a little bit of insight to what goes into the making of one of my pieces. I would like to pretend that the workshop is usually tidier than what it is the photos.

This week is Find a Maker week, so I'll be posting every day this week with a little bit more info about me and my business.

Meet the Maker: My name is Matt and I started M. Webb Furniture a few months ago after an intensive period of training furniture school. I aim to design and make elegant furniture with a timeless appeal. I am based in the north-west, just outside of Lancaster.

Before starting my business, I worked in the civil engineering sector. When not thinking about or making furniture, I can be found trail running.
