From a pastime to a full time business

Thirty plus years of making wines and cider for ourselves and friends as a hobby turned on the comment “ this is good enough to sell”. So started Marron ( Margaret and Ron ) Made For You Wines and Marron Cider in 2007. We sold through wine parties offering bespoke labelling for weddings etc. Our cider was taken up by The Lincolnshire Co-op and sold in 70 stores.

This success led to Marron Liqueurs which we promoted through several years of selling at food shows, rapidly refining our products from the feedback we received from the public, based on the premis that “ If you try you buy”. We created an e-commerce website http://marronliqueurs.co.uk for retail sales and in 2016 formed Tip Tap & Top Ltd to serve trade customers. The we became three when our son Matthew joined as Director for Product Development and the business took off offering a unique service to drinks retailers.

Based on “try before you buy” the concept of providing this in retail outlets such as farm shops, delis, garden centres was acheived by supplying the total system consisting of a secure lockable glass cabinet, dispensers for selected Marron Liqueurs and spirits, a selection of bottles for filling and all the legal requirements for labelling and sealing the filled bottles. All offered on a sale or return basis and low set up costs.

Supplying this to Mollie Sharp’s Cheese Shop and Deli in Selby led to a conversation between Jason, Lee and Matthew about making Mollie Sharp’s own gin. We already had HMRC licenses for Compounding ( to make liqueurs) so we applied for a further license to make spirits and set to work on their bespoke gin. Thus was created our first gin, Mollie Sharps’ Signature Gin at 42%abv, a dry gin with distinctive citrous notes, which proved very popular with their customers, so much so that they then commisioned to further products themed on the 950 year celebration of the founding of Selby Abbey. 950 Gin 37.5%abv a “pink gin” with red berry notes and a robust 950 Dark Rum a molasses rum with cinnamom spice enhanced by banana and orange notes.
