Fifteen years ago in 2005, Lochaber Hope, previously an abstract concept existing in the mind of only one person, was willed into existence through sheer determination and the power of one particular core belief: that every person, no matter who they are, should have access to support should they require it.
Through hard work and dedication, this concept grew into an organisation, which then grew into a network, which then grew into a community of volunteers, supporters, advocates, participants, and staff. Through this transformation, that same principle - the importance of support, the importance of people – provided the foundation on which this person-centred charity continues to build, offering a wide range of therapeutic, professional, confidential, never judgemental services, programmes, projects, groups, and individual support options such as counselling, mentoring, and mediation.
Initially, Lochaber Hope had it in mind to start this journey in the form of a therapeutic boat building project, even going so far as to rent a large industrial premises and equip a modest workspace in which to construct this craft. However, it soon became clear that there was a far greater local need for their support services than the boat building project could accommodate. In order to meet this demand, the boat building project was put on hold, but it remained an ambition to start a branch of the organisation based in woodwork and practical skills.
Enter The Workshop. Established in 2019, The Workshop is a brand new social enterprise branch of the Lochaber Hope charity.
At its core, The Workshop is a business, run by a professional joiner with over a decade of experience in professional construction and bench joinery, as well as extensive experience in the worlds of charity and social enterprise. The Workshop is fully equipped to design and manufacture high quality, bespoke pieces of indoor and outdoor furniture for both private customers and businesses alike. The difference is that everything The Workshop sells, goes toward supporting the programmes and services offered by Lochaber Hope, as well as its own socially conscious projects, such as providing volunteering opportunities for individuals to develop skills where they may otherwise have not had the opportunity, for example.
As a social enterprise, The Workshop retains at its core a set of values and guiding principles:
· Inclusivity
· Sensitivity
· Quality
· Strength through support
· Commitment to improvement
· Hope
In February of 2020, The Workshop began to fulfil the original aims of Lochaber Hope in the form of a boat building project. Volunteers from the local community had dedicated themselves to this project, and construction was underway. Unfortunately, in late March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it became impossible to continue this project at this time. Once again, the boat build has been put on hold, but rest assured that it will continue as soon as it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, The Workshop is ready to start taking commissions for bespoke furniture – the limits of which are your imagination.
