It's always great to uncover some history in the pieces we work on. This lovely chair came into the workshop for some frame repair work and a complete rebuild of the seat.
Whilst stripping the old seat down, we uncovered this label showing some of the chairs history. Originally made by Marsh, Jones & Cribb in 1889, the chair was then reupholstered in 1931. We think is was possibly upholstered again since then, but with no record.
Marsh, Jones & Cribb were renowned antique furniture cabinet makers in the Victorian era. They were known for their quality craftsmanship from Gothic to simple Arts & Crafts designs. They are interesting for their paper labels, with makers stamp, name and signature of the cabinet maker, with date. All of which are hand written.
Following the frame repairs, clean, revive, and polish. The seat was rebuilt using traditional methods and covered with a lovely bright Covertex Cantare Flame fabric, for a splash of colour, and finished off with a decorative nailed trim.
A lovely chair to work on with some great history to it. We returned the original label to the inside of the seat for future upholsterers to uncover.
