The engagement work is now done on the 'Creature Creations' waymarker project for Cantley Park in Doncaster. Based on the theme of wildlife taking part in active leisure, children from 3 local schools (including my old primary and secondary school!) and SMILE community support group created a set of amazing collages, now in an exhibition at Cantley Library. Visitors will have a chance to vote on their preferences with 3 dot stickers. They can stick their stickers all on one design if they have a clear favourite, or spread them amongst several if they like more than one. The stickers on the designs will create a 'heat map' of which designs people like best, and will then be included in the final designs for the sculptures. Future Parks Manager Ben Russell was the first to cast his eye over the creations.

Structures in the SEN outdoor space at St Georges C of E Primary in Gainsborough. I worked closely with staff to develop ideas that they felt would be most beneficial for their pupils. They wanted a space that could encourage social interaction, or be equally suitable for solitary play- sometimes children want... no- need, to be on their own. The den structure is a 'blank canvas' a space for play or study, with room for staff supervision if required - or easily monitored from a distance. The den sits next to a covered sand pit that facilitates sensory play, for fine motor skills and developing sensory regulation. Fine for one child, big enough for two or three- with a tarpaulin cover to keep it clean.
Composite decking space to the front of the structures adds more function, angled to create a social seating space along the front edge. Can't wait to see the area brought to life in the new academic year.

A simple timber structure? Maybe not so simple..
Proprioception is how our bodies sense physical space around them. In Autism, our bodies sense this differently. This provision, at the new SEN hub in St Georges C of E Primary School in Gainsborough allows children to grab and pull, or go between the timber walls and push with their hands and feet. This can have a calming and regulating effect on some children. The structure is surrounded by poles that can enable den building on or around the space, or simple fabric tents or covers can be assembled over the space. Rubber mulch safety surfacing has been laid around the area so children can lay, sit or crawl.

Every big project has a beginning, and it was a fantastic start to a new public art commission working with Y9 pupils at McAuley Catholic High School in Doncaster. They came up with some fantastic ideas for a series of sculptures I'll be making at Cantley Park, Developing a mash up of ideas of wild creatures and active leisure. Watch this space...

I was delighted to be asked to create an outdoor reading den at St George's Primary School in Gainsborough. Built in memory of Mrs
Oaks, a much loved teacher who passed away last year. The structure is built from pressure treated timber, with a deck made from composite plastic. The memorial tree inside is made (obviously!) from oak. The shape of the bench encourages social interaction between children and staff, and has plenty of room for books and provision to be stored underneath. A perfect addition to playtime (not all children want to run around), and a valuable tool for taking learning outside the classroom.

"I love it!"
Katie Barry, Headteacher.

It's all in the details...
The request from staff at Arbourthorne Primary School in Sheffield was for lots of holes, nooks, crannies in this oak bench. Places for staff and children to place things, to act as creative stimulus and to display work. And a nod of recognition to Hannah. A loved member of staff who passed away. She was known for having long curly hair, echoed in the wavy carving on the edge of the seat.

Installed in Sheffield the other week, this oak bench was commissioned by Arbourthorne Primary School. Made as a memorial to Hannah, a teacher who sadly passed away. The seat is curved to create a 'huggy bench' as Hannah's daughter described the original design. A space for talking, socialising, sharing and remembering. The hidey holes and nooks and crannies are places where stimulus can be placed, to encourage imaginative story telling and writing.
