I was delighted to be asked to create an outdoor reading den at St George's Primary School in Gainsborough. Built in memory of Mrs
Oaks, a much loved teacher who passed away last year. The structure is built from pressure treated timber, with a deck made from composite plastic. The memorial tree inside is made (obviously!) from oak. The shape of the bench encourages social interaction between children and staff, and has plenty of room for books and provision to be stored underneath. A perfect addition to playtime (not all children want to run around), and a valuable tool for taking learning outside the classroom.

"I love it!"
Katie Barry, Headteacher.

It's all in the details...
The request from staff at Arbourthorne Primary School in Sheffield was for lots of holes, nooks, crannies in this oak bench. Places for staff and children to place things, to act as creative stimulus and to display work. And a nod of recognition to Hannah. A loved member of staff who passed away. She was known for having long curly hair, echoed in the wavy carving on the edge of the seat.

Installed in Sheffield the other week, this oak bench was commissioned by Arbourthorne Primary School. Made as a memorial to Hannah, a teacher who sadly passed away. The seat is curved to create a 'huggy bench' as Hannah's daughter described the original design. A space for talking, socialising, sharing and remembering. The hidey holes and nooks and crannies are places where stimulus can be placed, to encourage imaginative story telling and writing.

12 years ago I was commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council to create some benches to be sited on the old colliery spoil heap at Shireoaks, Nottinghamshire. This spring I was asked to refresh the space with some new oak seat tops, using the original aluminum plaques, cast from layered card designs done by local children. They will all be adults now, possibly with children of their own, but their artwork lives on...and I feel really quite old!πŸ‘΄
A cracking, sunny day on site, with willing help from NCC land management officer Ted Wooddisse.

"Can you make us some nice lively and colorful benches to replace a pair of old tired ones please Lewis?"

Of course! And yes, I can make them in keeping with the school 'peas in a pod' theme.

2 new benches recently installed at St Peter and St Paul's Primary School in Scunthorpe.

Pretty much job done at St Georges Primary School in Gainsborough. The wildlife area meadow was sown today by a willing group of Y3 pupils. A heavy clay soil meadow mix was broadcast into the freshly filled soil, and the work done last year was looking resplendent in the spring sun. The school was was awarded an RHS Grey to Green grant, to develop an underused plot of school grounds. The area was fenced (with a rainbow entrance arch) a bark chip path laid down, a study shelter/den was constructed complete with guttering to feed the bog garden with rain water and bug boxes installed along with a prayer post.
But the best thing has been to return this spring to see how the space is being used by the school for their learning- tadpoles growing in the tank, tree species in pots, plaster- cast hedgehog hand prints from the wet soil, loads of literacy prompts... Brilliant work from Katy their resident outdoor learning guru.

A book nook, recently installed at St Peter and St Paul's Primary School in Scunthorpe received a neat finishing touch. The children were asked to come up with a name for it in a school-wide competition. Yours truly was then asked to pick a winner, and make a sign to be added to the structure. A tough choice from some great ideas, but the 'Leafy Library' it is.

No better way to spend a wet winter week than on site in the mud and rain!🌧
I've always been passionate about wildlife, nature, and allowing children to connect with the outdoors. Therefore I was thrilled to be asked to do more work ar Austerfield Study Centre in Doncaster, having created 2 pond dipping shelters for them several years ago.

"Another great effort from Lewis here at Austerfield Study Centre. Lewis with his attention to details brings a much needed facelift to our onsite pond this year creating two new dipping platforms for the children to use over the coming years. Here at Austerfield it is important to keep investing in our activities so children can benefit from a visit to Austerfield for years to come."

Nigel Senior
General Manager Austerfield Study Centre

Book Nook, St Peter and St Paul's Primary School, Scunthorpe.
Commissioned by the school to create a woodland themed reading den in their library area. The structure can be used as a quiet 'going away place' as well as storage and a display for projects and topics. Constructed from oak and pine. I'll be judging an in-school competition to give the den a name. I cant wait to see what they come up with!

Another reading den is in the pipeline. A woodland style 'book nook' is underway for a school in Scunthorpe. Tree themed reading spaces and book storage is something I've done before- there must be something about bringing the outdoors in thats an enduring theme. This one will be a nice mix of softwood and solid oak boards. It's nice to have a workshop based job in this grotty weather!
