It’s seven years since my youngest son wrote this on my Made Up Interiors chalkboard and he’s now an adult! Miss those days of when they were cute and little, full of adoration for their Mummy, and we would go out on day trips as a family. Now I hardly see them - but I suppose that, given I have recently returned from Helsinki with COVID and feel AWFUL, today would have been a damp squib anyway!

But I’m the lucky one. I’m a Mum of three healthy boys, and I still have my elderly Mum. Today’s a hard day for many people for a multitude of reasons and to you all I say, I see you. You’re not alone X

Over three hours of sanding condensed into under a minute! Having slapped Annie Sloan white all over it, I sanded most of it off again to help emphasise the beautiful carving in this piece. It’s also brought out the aged patina of the timber and smoothed off its neglected surface, such that it’s now a joy to touch. “See with your eyes, Looli”, as my dear woodworker Dad used to say…

This desk is starting to take shape and look like what I had envisioned in my head, back when it was a pile of about fifty pieces that I needed to fit back together like a puzzle! In true puzzle style I still have some bits left over 🤷🏻‍♀️ Most people would have dumped it, such was its state - rotten, fallen apart, and full of woodworm - and to be honest, I nearly did, too. I’m so glad I didn’t!

Next job, waxing.

After prepping the surface, next job was painting the first coat! This is always a bit nerve wracking but I have a vision and it’s important to trust the process…

This project has been such a labour of love but after many months I’m finally seeing some progress. I wish that I had taken a ‘before’ picture because it really was a 3D jigsaw puzzle of about 65 pieces which I had to figure out how to put back together - it had sat in a Yorkshire garden over winter and by the time I got it home it was effectively a pile of rotten wood, which frankly overwhelmed me and I might have given up upon without the encouragement of my Conservator friend, Tess! In true jigsaw style I seem to have some bits left over 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I’ve also had to add bits in, such as PVAing webbing onto cracked pieces of wood or rebuilding and filling sections with P.38 and a mixture of sawdust and watered down PVA.

Today I filed those bits back and gave it a good sanding ready for painting, with my Dad’s words ringing in my ears, “See with your fingers, Looli”... I inevitably found some more bits that needed PVAing and clamping but suspect that may be an ongoing issue with this piece! It’s not going to be sold, so that’s OK.

About 3 hours condensed into 30 seconds of film here!

If you missed me at today’s Eco Fayre then here’s the “after” shot of the sewing table I upcycled. It’s painted in Annie Sloan French Linen chalk paint, with a mandala stencilled on the top to resemble a retro-style lace doily, then waxed to seal.

Don’t let its original purpose constrain you! This would look equally great as a bedside table or as a side table in your living room (complete with storage to hide away those ugly remote controls that always seem to disappear when you want to watch TV!). And at only £65, I just may keep this unique piece for myself if no one snaps it up before I change my mind…
