It’s whatever they want it to be…. 🧚‍♀️🗡️🏴‍☠️ A dragon’s lair at dawn, an ice-cream parlour by lunchtime, a pirate hideout before home time.

Our hobbit house at Sawtry Infant School has quickly become a treasured part of the children’s outdoor space.

🏡 In their early years, play is far more than fun. It’s where language grows and creativity takes root. Spaces like this encourage children to step away from screens and into shared adventures. It’s this journey of encouraging them back into the outdoors which makes all our projects so worthwhile.

This project was exciting from start to finish, thanks to the team at Sawtry who gave us a license to be creative within their brief. The best results always come when quirky logs and planks we’ve gathered over the years lead the way. Each curve, knot and grain shaping this wonderfully whimsical structure.

Thanks for reading. We’d love to know: what would your children turn this hobbit house into? 🪄

“Adventure awaits” 🌳✨ Flowing naturally from one level to the next, our inclusive structure for Suffolk’s Parish Council encourages children of all abilities to be brave and grow their confidence.

It’s been a pleasure working with the parish council on this project, who originally came to us with feedback from children and parents in the community ahead of the design process. From there, where we developed our design for the team to approve ahead of creation.

The result is one we’re extremely proud of, with its soft pour rubber surface for wheelchair and pram access, alongside varying levels for children who wish, and are able, to adventure further.

We’re also very proud to be a sustainability-first company, choosing to build the structure out of sweet chestnut sourced from a coppice in the neighbouring county — that’s a very low carbon footprint! 👣

We love seeing our structures in action and look forward to working with more councils, schools and private clients looking to invite more adventure into their young people’s lives. Get in contact today to talk about your dream structure.

It’s been a real pleasure to revisit this project and reflect on the collaborative effort that brought it to life. From early ideas to the final details, this was a build shaped by a shared enthusiasm for whimsical design and carpentry.

🌳Hidden from first view, tucked amongst the planting, a set of stairs leads up to an octagonal playhouse sitting proudly on a raised deck. From here, the world opens up: a tangle of balance beams and stepping logs weaves through thickly planted borders below, inviting exploration at every turn.

At the back of the deck, a cargo net climbs to a higher platform, complete with a fireman’s pole and a gently wobbly rope bridge. Woven willow barriers provide a sense of privacy while echoing the continuous willow fence that encloses the garden beneath, tying the whole space together.

Projects like this remind us why we love what we do: the excitement of shaping timber, the satisfaction of thoughtful craftsmanship, and the breadth of the finished result when everything comes together.

☀️Thanks again to our collaborators, Garden Designer and woven fencing specialists in Cambridge. It’s always a treat to work with those who share the same level of passion and commitment to our projects.

Our long-standing collaboration with Cavendish Schools, thanks to the team commissioning us for multiple projects over the years, has allowed us to truly refine our craft of tailored spaces.

For this KS1 play area in Quorn, the brief focused on sensory engagement, physical challenge and inclusivity. Here, we began with detailed CAD drawings, carefully translating ideas into forms that balanced imagination with safety, durability and flow.

The result is a rich, playful landscape complete with stepping stilts, nest swing, balance beam, roofed tower while offering quieter bench spaces with game panel and texture panel for reflection and connection.

To keep every structure safe and beautifully sound for years to come, our team also carries out regular maintenance visits. A bonus has to be hearing how much the pupils are enjoying the final piece.

An exciting update! Our long-standing working relationship with Audley End Miniature Railway is ramping up, yet again, with the bringing to life of the 2026 Woodland Village! 🌳

You will see plenty of updates on our page, with drawings of five hobbit houses we’re building, on-site work updates, and a sneaky peek of three fairy houses we are designing and constructing for the spring.

The Fairy Walk is such a fantastic journey to be a part of, where we feel very lucky to play a key part, more about this soon!

Thanks again to AEMR. Check out their page, or find out more about our past projects and ethos on the Artisan Structure website.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Artisan Structures. 🎄

The finishing touches have now been added to our latest treehouse project in Cambridge, including insulation, heating, a bed, sleeping bear lighting, and festive rugs, just in time for Christmas. 🎁

✨Tap across to our Instagram page to see this space in full. It really was a magnificent project to work on, and we can’t wait for even more private treehouse projects in the new year.

It’s been nice to be back in the woods this week, with all the leaves and chestnut husks replacing the leafy shade!

The woods are where we store, collect and gather our wood, after it is felled, planked and processed.

Our enclosed Cambridgeshire workshop, on the edge of the fens, and the woodland workshop here in Suffolk are only a stone’s throw from each other, but have a very different feel.

The plan to build a sheltered workspace in the woods is also starting to feel much closer, as we’ve now designed a very simple and achievable sweet chestnut and larch open-plan structure. This will allow us to be sheltered while on the framing bed or jaw-horse, negotiating the larger sweet chestnut poles for pre-fabrication, while having the most beautiful, undisturbed view of our surroundings…keep a look out for future updates!

It truly is a magical way to work ✨

From the framing bed in the woods to the trestles in the workshop, the process demands patience and total commitment to every task. It is not easy, but it is deeply rewarding.

These projects draw the very best from us as a creative team. Ideas begin to spark within the tailored design and often require us to step away from our CAD drawings, asking us to visualise how each pole and plank will work together to bring the structure to life.

We have been completely absorbed in this project and have loved every part of it. The energy on site between craftspeople, trades and client has been a real joy, and while it feels almost a shame to be finished, it is a pleasure to see the finished structure standing exactly as it was imagined.

Looking back at this project fills us with pride! This outdoor learning space was designed with sustainability and creativity at its core. The soil from the groundwork was repurposed to create a beautiful sedum and herb mound—eliminating unnecessary haulage, enhancing the landscape, and providing a vibrant home for bees and insects. 🐝

Our mission was to create a space that is both practical and inspiring, giving pupils and staff a place to connect with nature while enjoying the beauty of their surroundings. It’s always a pleasure to collaborate closely with schools, working through their brief and vision to craft something truly special for the whole community.

Artisan Structures

Handcrafted beautiful, natural creations unique to you.

Artisan Structures was born out of a passion for the outdoors and the amazing things it provides. Founded by craftsmen with a focus on quality and traditional woodworking methods, everything we create is unique to you. We work with you to achieve your dream vision, whether that be an outdoor kitchen, an alfresco dining area, a lakeside structure, a magical treehouse, or a dream play-area.

Each project begins in the woods, we debark the trees we use ourselves, all of our projects are guided by the wood we work with, allowing its unique quirks, curves and strengths to sculpt what we create. We do our utmost to ensure that we use locally sourced coppiced timber, our go-to species to use are oak, sweet chestnut and larch. We work with both private homes as well as schools and other related organisations, all of which can be seen on our website.
