That first coat of oil never gets old. 🥃

Every end-grain cutting board that leaves my Edinburgh workshop is built using exactly the same tools and materials as when I build bespoke furniture. This particular board is meticulously assembled from precision-cut 3x3 cm blocks- a labour-intensive process that creates a striking, premium geometric aesthetic. At 54 x 33 x 5 cm and weighing around 6 kg, this is the largest of the three sizes I have available. They stay stable on your counter while you work. It takes time, but it’s the only way to build a proper culinary heirloom.
If you care about your high-end knives—or any knife in your kitchen—end-grain is the only way to go. Unlike standard long-grain boards, the upright wood fibres actually separate, allowing the blade to pass through, making it incredibly gentle on the steel. Because those fibres naturally close back up, the board is self-healing and won't show the same harsh wear and tear over time.
My new Szimpel Woodwork online shop is officially live.
I currently have a limited selection of boards available in Black American Walnut, Maple, and Cherry, across two styles, and three different sizes (Small, Medium, and Large).

This Black American Walnut and Maple end-grain cutting board is now finished and ready to be showcased as a final product. I'm pleased with how it looks. Additionally, I'm pleased to report that this cutting board has already been sold; however, don't worry, there are over thirty others to choose from if you are interested.

This is my very first CNC project. Make some mistakes, which you can see in the video. I watched a couple of videos about the VCarve and decided to try making something without much preparation. Believe it or not, I'm pretty happy with the result. I was expecting a complete disaster. It took me about half an hour to design it and create the toolpaths. The machining took significantly longer than expected, approximately 55 minutes. I haven't noticed the very shallow passes. I wasn't sure how to make changes in UCCNC, if possible, but I included the speeds, which helped a lot.
I'm looking forward to making it again, hopefully much faster, and starting with a proper bit.
I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to making more things on CNC and learn the Vcarve

Mineral oil application. Cherry endgrain cutting board.

This is a very satisfying moment, after many hours, you finally see the effect of your work.
This is a cherry end-grain cutting board, 54x33x5 centimetres.

Satisfying? Watch to the end!

Look how simple walnut and maple pieces of wood change into a very nice checker pattern on an end-grain chopping board.

I'm making a batch (maybe too big) of end-grain cutting boards. I was planning to keep it simple, without anything funky, but temptation was bigger.

This long, very tall, relatively narrow oak table was commissioned for a customer in London to fit a specific space. The process of making this table was recorded and posted on YouTube. I made the video and the editing, so please don't expect a Hollywood production😅. The link to the video is in the distinction, or you can find me on YouTube as SzimpelWoodwork. https://youtu.be/uM4erm3srcc.
