A graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art, Simon Muir has over twenty-years experience making bespoke pieces of furniture. His work is defined in part by his experience of the Scottish landscape; inspired by the timeless colours and geological forms of Scotland’s mountains, lochs and forests. He is passionate about design and craftsmanship, particularly the forms and materials of mid-century mode

rn designers such as Alvar Aalto and George Nelson. Simon uses an unusual combination of European and African timbers alongside formica in many of his designs to produce furniture that is modern and elegant. The funiture workshop in located in the heart of Edinburgh at the Albion Studios near Easter Road. The ‘ABC’ is a red brick former lemonade factory converted into a number of design studios and workshops where Muir manufactures hand made furniture, using traditional cabinet-making techniques. Many pieces are one-off commissions but Muir also undertakes larger, corporate projects.

This is an ongoing project which is nearly done. Almost there!!

Oak veneer paired with solid oak gives it a warm, refined feel, and using Blum Legrabox throughout is a strong sign of quality. The slim drawer profile and smooth action on the Blum runners make a huge difference in both feel and longevity.

A kitchen built mostly in oak can look incredibly premium when it’s nearly complete, especially once the final detailing goes in—handles (or handleless rails), worktops, lighting, and finishing oil/lacquer are usually what make it feel fully “finished.” Blum Legrabox is a great choice for that clean contemporary look, and it pairs especially well with oak because the hardware stays understated and lets the timber do the work visually.

It already sounds like one of those projects where the materials and hardware are doing the talking—thoughtful, high-end, and built to last. Once the final touches are in, it’ll likely look exceptional.

This kitchen was Designed for a repeat client in London, bringing together a restrained palette of natural materials and dark detailing. It features solid ash framing, stained black to define the architecture of the cabinetry, paired with ash frontages that keep the overall feel warm and understated. The birch-ply carcasses introduce a subtle layered edge and add to the honest, crafted quality of the joinery. The result is a calm, elegant kitchen with a strong material identity—functional, timeless, and quietly characterful.
