SolidWorks Simulation Xpress was used to simulate a 27kg loading, 264.8N (max. rating) on this blow-moulded platform component. The stress analysis showed that a larger radii around the pad pocket would help to reduce the stress points The analysis also confirmed that the deflection was within an acceptable range and that the platform behaved as expected.
Using eDrawings it was possible to share results with the client & toolmaker.

"If you want to leverage design from a position of ‘strategic involvement’ to one of ‘strategic partner’, then hire a highly competent design leader and let her or him organise all design competences by reporting directly to the CEO. In short, enable the design leader to organise a design department that will deliver the maximum value to all areas of your business." - Yasushi Kusume

You'd have to agree that this kind of arrangement between Steve Jobs and Jony Ive yielded some of the most memorable products of the early 21st century. A CEO that understands good taste and good design and above all trusts his lead designer yields the rewards that brings. It will be interesting to see if the post Ive era at Apple is as productive & creative. Lets hope Tim Cook isn't just hiring Sunday designers to do and write post-it notes in between sessions of air-hockey.

Yasushi Kusume is Innovation and Creative Manager at IKEA and formerly headed up branding and design for companies like Electrolux and Phillips. We asked him what constitutes a great designer, and where the concept of ‘design thinking’ fits.

First book of the New Year. The excellent No. More. Plastic. by Martin Dorey. 2020 is going to be a year of more reading and trying to cut down on single use plastics. Ironically it was paid for by a plastic National Book Token - another example of a SUP that we’ve come to ‘accept’.

My November blog talked about our addiction to stuff and how consumerism has made single use a culture we’ve too easily accepted. https://ivesproductdesign.com/blog/2019/3/1/how-did-plastic-go-from-being-a-hero-product-to-a-villain

About ives product design

Its always good to challenge yourself, to keep learning and to stay hungry. After 20+ years working as a product designer in various roles I decided to make 2017 the year of change.

I’d always wanted to start my own consultancy but you need to have the right elements in place before you start. There’s no substitiute for experience and there’s no short cuts around hard work.

Early April 2017 I started my own consultancy business: ives product design. The primary purpose of the business is to help people get their ideas into the market place. Whether that be a start-up or a multi-national the principle is the same, I am here to help. There are a few pointers on how to do this on the website. There are outlines of four Product Development Partnerships: Research, Concept, Detail & Manufacture.

Having spent a lot of time in in-house product development I know that speed is key. By bringing on board a Product Design consultant you can achieve a lot in a very short space of time because you can benefit from their focus, passion and knowledge.
