First go at grafting our own queens and I’m buzzing with the result…8 out of 10 grafts accepted 👑🐝

For anyone wondering, grafting is where we carefully transfer tiny larvae from one of our best colonies into special queen cups so the bees can raise them as new queens. We do it so we can breed from colonies that show the traits we want to keep strong temperaments, good honey production, healthy brood patterns and bees that overwinter well.

It’s a pretty delicate job and seeing the bees take to 8 out of the 10 grafts feels like a massive win for our first attempt.

Next steps are letting the queen cells develop, moving them into nucs at the right time and then hopefully getting some well mated queens laying strongly over the coming weeks. Plenty can still happen from here, but it’s a really exciting stage in the process.
Definitely one of those moments that reminds you how fascinating beekeeping really is 🐝

And just like that, February has come to an end! 👋🌧
With all the rain this month, you might think things slow down on the farm… but there’s always plenty happening behind the scenes 🐝🍯 From checking on the hives to keeping everything ticking over, it’s been a busy one!
Pop over to our latest blog to catch up on everything we got up to in February and keep following along with our monthly farm updates 🌱🚜

More Rain, more Plans, and a trip to the Beekeeping Show February has been a proper mixed bag. February has definitely been…damp. There’s been a lot more rain, plenty of muddy boots, and more than a few weather app checks. But as always, even when the skies are grey, there’s plenty happening b...

After what feels like the longest start to the year, we’ve finally managed to get some of our new out apiaries set up 🙌🐝

The weather really hasn’t been playing ball since the new year, rain, wind, and more rain, but we grabbed our window and made it count. Days like this remind us why we do it.

Tucked away in the heart of the South Downs, this new site is something special. Rolling hills, open skies, and the kind of peace you only find when you’re properly off the beaten tack.

Spring is slowly waking everything up around us. The blackthorn is bursting into life, hawthorn not far behind, sweet chestnut waiting in the wings, and carpets of bluebells adding a wash of colour through the hedgerows. Hazel catkins have been swaying in the breeze, feeding the early foragers, while dandelion, willow, and field maple are offering up their first nectar and pollen flows of the season.

You can feel the momentum building in the colonies now, fresh pollen coming in, brood rearing ramping up, and that unmistakable spring energy in the air.
