Operating a mobile crane in high wind

As we head into Summer with some unseasonal windy weather, Carter Plant Hire offers some general information on the subject. High winds can affect crane lifts, which can have a knock-on effect on build schedules. It is, therefore, important to understand the limits when a crane is required.

Operators will always err on the side of caution in high winds, as they pose an extreme hazard to crane operation. Details of the legal limits are published in BS7121-1:2016, the British code of practice for safe use of cranes, which gives all standards that must be met for carrying out crane lifting operations in the UK.

The safe wind speed for lifting will be stated in the crane manufacturer's operator manual and are likely to vary depending on the type of crane and the weight. However, as a general rule, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises against operating cranes in winds greater than 25 mph (40.23 km/h) 11.18 meters per second - with gusts not exceeding 35 mph (56.32 km/h).

Environmental factors such as wind direction, crane stability, the weight of the cargo being lifted, and crane placement must also be taken into account.

In order to accurately analyse the wind conditions at the crane operation location, wind speed and direction measurements at several heights may be required. The other factor to be taken into account is the vortex effect that can be caused by tall buildings, in which wind speeds rise with height, as this may lead a crane to topple over. The risk increases when the boom is extended because the crane's centre of gravity becomes less stable. Being aware of potential dangers will allow the operator to take precautions such as altering the angle of the boom or shutting down the crane if necessary.

Handheld or tripod-mounted anemometers can be used to measure the wind speed on site and some cranes are fitted with anemometers that measure wind speed and direction near the boom's tip. These reading will allow the crane operator to decide when it is safe to operate the crane.

Lifting Becci of Ladram

This week Carter Plant Hire was again at Exmouth Marina to lift the small fishing vessel, Becci of Ladram onto the quayside for her annual clean. This involves a new coat of paint and replacement sacrificial anodes (small metal blocks that attract corrosion away from the main vessel and its working parts).

The last time we visited Exmouth Marina was to unload a WWII bomb that had been dredged up out at sea, so this was a much less stressful job.

Carter Plant Hire regularly lifts high value items such as boats and mobile homes that require specialist lifting gear, so if you have something large that needs to be moved, please don't hesitate to contact us or telephone 01395 446446.

Lifting Canopies at Armada Way, Plymouth - case study

Last week Carter Plant Hire was lifting new canopies into place at the redevelopment of Armada Way in Plymouth.

The canopies were manufactured by Stoneman Engineering, then collected, transported to Plymouth and lifted into place by Carter Plant Hire. The project is being run by Morgan Sindall for Plymouth City Council as part of the regeneration of the city centre.

If you have a project that requires liaison with multiple contractors, transportation and/or lifting of components or would just like to discuss your requirements, please contact us or telephone 01395 446 446.

Lifting derelict boats from Brixham Marina - case study

This week Carter Plant Hire has been working with Marine and Boat Recycling to lift end-of-life yachts and boats from Brixham Marina and transport them to their recycling facility in Tavistock.

The yacht shown was certainly past its best but it will be completely recycled or disposed of with zero material going to landfill. In total, six vessels were removed and transported in one day. Hard work, but very rewarding - cleaning up our waterways and knowing that nothing will go to waste.

If you have a boat or yacht that you need to lift in (or out) of the water or transport elsewhere, please feel free to contact us or call 01395 446446.

WW2 Bomb Found in Exmouth Marina Safely Removed and Destroyed

In the early hours of Friday 16 January, Carter Plant Hire supported Royal Navy bomb disposal specialists in the safe removal of a 250kg German World War II bomb from the Mannin dredger at Exmouth Marina.

Following its removal, the device was transported and safely detonated offshore near Ladram Bay. The operation was completed successfully, thanks to the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved.

Lifting glazing units - case study

This week Carter Plant Hire has been lifting glazing units for a curtain wall in a new hotel at Noss Marinas, Noss-on-Dart near Kingswear in Devon.

This involved the use of specialist lifting gear with strong suction pads and a very steady hand on the controls. Luckily, something we are very used to.

If you have a project that requires specialist gear or skills, please feel free to contact us or telephone 01395 446446 for a quote or advice.

Lifting balcony stacks - case study

For most of last week Carter Plant Hire was on site for Stoneman Engineering lifting balconies into place one on top of the other in stacks.

The pictures below say it all.

This type of job requires skill and precision to make sure everything lines up exactly and the resulting balconies are safe and secure for future homeowners.

If you have a similar project, please feel free to contact us through Facebook or telephone 01395 446446. We will be happy to provide advice and a free quotation.

Winter is coming - how to avoid lifting delays

Weather can affect a lift in several ways:

• Heavy snow and ice can sometimes stop a mobile crane from getting to site or make moving around site difficult and dangerous.

• In the very coldest weather brickies and other trades cannot work, which can delay the lifting of roof trusses or steels for as long as it takes them to catch up.

• High winds can stop all lift operations at any time of the year, as it may be difficult to control loads safely.

• Heavy rain can make ground conditions difficult, so that grillage may be needed to support the weight of the crane and sites may become waterlogged making it difficult for the crane to move around safely.

• Mist and fog can limit visibility making it difficult for the crane driver and slinger/signaler to communicate or see what they are lifting.

• Very hot weather can soften tarmac meaning that additional grillage may be needed to support the weight of the crane in order to avoid damage to the surface.

Most of these issues can be overcome with careful planning but, ultimately, nobody can control the weather, so it is important to communicate any change in site conditions to your crane contractor so that they can do their best to mitigate any adverse effect.
