With workspaces being open plan and privacy at a premium, solutions were needed to bring a sense of solitude and silence back to the office. 2011 saw the rise of Norah - a single-seat sofa den designed and created to provide a quiet space for individual working. Born by a hungry JDD Furniture, they wanted the world to see that commercial furniture didn't have to be boring but could be stylish and functional, ditching the traditional materials and adopting softer, more welcoming options.

Norah, created as "a secluded space for a silent moment," stood out thanks to her unique styling. Angled high walls added privacy while reducing external acoustic noise. An upholstered frame finished in contrasting fabrics, and thick plush cushioning provided a comfortable seat that was welcoming to anyone approaching.

Fast-forward to 2025, and Nora is back! We've dropped the H and given her a facelift, but we haven't compromised or sacrificed her fundamentals or the quality and luxury we are renowned for. We have tweaked her styling, replaced the foam, and added new options. Historically only available as a convertible, a hard-top version is now an option, providing a roofed option for extra privacy.

Still true to her roots as a secluded space for a silent moment, Nora continues to offer the same sense of privacy, comfort, and quiet focus—now with even more ways to make solitude stylish.

Global Wellness Day!

On this day, it's important to reflect on an area of business that is often overlooked—the wellbeing of your employees. At JDD, we have made a huge push to provide products that help offer a peaceful sanctuary amidst the hectic open-plan environment. Products such as our Penelope Workbooth, Yume Rest Pod, and Nita Sofa Den provide privacy and a comfortable area to focus, take a call, or just unwind and disconnect.

When speaking to our head product designer, Henry Watson, he said: "When planning and designing new products, we must tackle this everyday concern - the lack of dedicated spaces in workplaces for employees to decompress and recharge."

In 2024, nearly 10% of UK adults took time off for mental health reasons; that's over 3.5 million people, often due to burnout, stress and depression. This figure outlines that more has to be done to protect employee wellbeing while at work. After all, we spend more time at work than at home!

We had the pleasure of visiting What Plastics for a company tour and to make our own recycled plastic panel. For those who don't know, What Plastics are transforming discarded materials into high-quality, 100% recycled surface sheets, giving plastic a second chance and making it something to be proud of. Their mission is to rescue plastic from waste, to show the world exactly where it comes from, and to prove that sustainability doesn't have to be boring or hide behind vague claims.

The first stop on our visit was to understand where the plastic came from. The majority came from either a national white goods company or car manufacturers. The Plastic pellets used are reclaimed from fridge freezers and other large appliances. This traceability is incredible, and What Plastics can narrow down where each bag comes from within a five-mile radius! Car manufacturers provide black pellets primarily made from car interiors, such as door panels and dashboards. Although traceability is a little harder, they are working to be able to trace the plastic back to the car registration! Amazing!

They also add any plastic they find, including old food containers and items recycled by local schools and businesses.

Now, the fun part! We were invited to get hands-on and create our plastic design. Starting with a tray of black pellets, the team mixed in an array of other plastics, including yoghurt pots, edging and food containers - think of it like making a pizza, adding different layers and textures. Once we were advised we had added enough (we may have got a little carried away), everything was mixed by hand and carefully loaded into the hot press. Over time, the plastics melt and mould together, and the machine needs to be manually wound tighter as time goes on.

Once the hot press process is over, the plastic is immediately transferred to the cold compress to cool it and ensure it hardens at an equal rate throughout. The cold compress also prevents warping and bowing.

We left there with a wealth of new knowledge and a newfound respect for their innovative solution of turning plastic waste into a beautiful, functional building material.

A few days later, we received the panels, and we were able to cut them to size to use them in our new product. For those of you who managed to see us at Clerkenwell Design Week, you will have noticed the new Henry Bench and Table set outside - those gorgeous recycled plastic tops? Yep, that's what the guys created, and we couldn't be happier with the result. It is durable, waterproof, easy to work with, and looks fantastic. To top it off, it's made from waste! No new material was used to create it, and that's a massive step in our mission to reduce our waste as much as possible.

Those who haven't seen our new products can view them on our website. You can also check out What Plastics' website at https://www.whatplastics.com/. It's a really exciting time at JDD Furniture, and we can't wait for you to continue the journey with us.

We are thrilled to share that JDD Furniture has been nominated for the prestigious Manufacturer of the Year award at the Mix Awards 2025! It's such an exciting moment for the entire team, and we couldn't be prouder. This recognition speaks to all the hard work the JDD team has put into creating beautiful, functional furniture that looks great and stands up to the test of time. We've always been passionate about craftsmanship and innovative design, so being in the running for this award feels like a real nod to our dedication.

Bea has a wide range of standard customisations you can choose from to ensure she is as dynamic as your workspace. Let's take a look at the variations and how they help you:

Sizes: Choose from a one seat workbook for individual work through to two, four, or six seat meeting pods better suited for meetings and collaborative work.

Floor: Bea has floor options with and without, depending on the environment.

Glass doors: These provide a fully enclosed pod, maintaining privacy and reducing environmental noise while utilising natural light and making the interior space feel much larger. Glass manifestations allow you to brand or customise the look and feel of the glass doors.

Back wall options: Fully upholstered back walls give the ultimate privacy and can also divide an open-plan workspace. Half-back walls maintain privacy by obstructing the field of vision while allowing more natural airflow and lighting. Glass back walls are great for when you want to provide the best natural lighting while dampening external noise. An open-sided option is perfect to encourage collaboration when stylish seating is needed or when you want to have Bea situated by an existing window.

Adaptive lighting and ventilation: To match your exact requirements, adjustable lights and fans allow you to customise your experience, ensuring you are comfortable at all times.

Power: Add power to increase Bea's functionality. UK and EU sockets, USB-A, USB-C, and HDMI ports are all available (to name a few).

Tables: We have a table solution for any configuration you choose. Whether tapered, square, freestanding, or mounted, a desk space is a must.
