A member of our community has been reunited with a significant sum of money after becoming the victim of a romance fraud in which he was led to believe he was in a genuine relationship with a woman he met online.

The victim was persuaded over a period of time that he was communicating with a woman who had a romantic interest in him. Through regular contact and the development of what appeared to be a trusting relationship, the fraudster convinced him to send money under various false pretences.

Following intelligence received, officers launched an investigation which helped identify and trace funds linked to the fraud. Through enquiries and partnership working, officers were able to secure the return of the victim’s money.

Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Lisa Hornberger said: “Romance fraud can have a devastating impact on victims, both financially and emotionally. Criminals are skilled manipulators who spend time building trust and creating a false sense of connection before asking for money. We are pleased that, through investigative work and intelligence gathering, we were able to help recover funds for the victim in this case.

“We would encourage anyone who has met someone online and is being asked for money to stop and think carefully. If something doesn’t feel right, speak to a trusted friend or family member and seek advice before making any payments.”

Officers are reminding members of the public over the laws around trespassing in abandoned or derelict buildings and burglary in response to recent incidents in Worcestershire.

One incident saw three teenage boys arrested on suspicion of burglary last Thursday (28 May) after accessing a property undergoing renovation in Droitwich.

They were bailed pending further enquiries, but police are warning of the safety risks and potential criminality for anyone thinking of doing the same.

Abandoned and derelict buildings often contain unstable structures, exposed wiring, hazardous materials, and unsafe flooring and there is and high risk of serious injury from falls, collapsing walls or ceilings, and other environmental dangers.

It can also place the emergency services at additional risk when responding to incidents in unsafe environments.

In terms of the law, entering a building without permission may constitute criminal trespass or burglary, depending on the circumstances.

Causing damage to property, whether intentional or reckless, can result in charges of criminal damage and individuals found inside such buildings may also be subject to arrest if tools or items associated with forced entry are present.

Safer Neighbourhood Inspector for Droitwich Lisa Hornberger said: “We would like to remind members of the public around the laws and safety risks around entering abandoned buildings following some recent incidents.

“We are discouraging people from committing an unlawful entry and encouraging parents to speak to their children around this too.

“We cannot emphasise enough that such behaviour can lead to both serious harm and/or criminal prosecution.”

This morning this young man came to Droitwich Police Station and handed some money that he's found on the street and wanted to do the right thing. Afterwards, he tried on our uniform and then went to our Police Van and put a naughty parent into the back of the Police Van. He also made sure that the sirens worked very well! New recruit in waiting.

🧶 🚔 Spotted outside Droitwich Police Station today.. a suspicious gathering of Mr Men characters!

Thankfully, local officers acted quickly and got to the bottom of it and discovered they were part of the Rik Mayall Festival celebrations. No arrests were made, although reports suggest Mr Bump was spoken to about repeated collisions with street furniture. 😂 🤕

A huge well done to the talented knitters who created these fantastic little characters. They've certainly brightened up the front of the station and brought a lot of smiles to passers-by and us as well.

Crime down? Maybe not. Wool usage up? Definitely! 🧶 🚔😄
