If you’re planning a new kitchen, here are a few ideas from our Oakwood project…

💫We swapped wall cabinets for shelving, this keeps everything feeling more open and relaxed— a room to hang out in, instead of just for cooking.

💫 A herringbone floor adds some lovely pattern to layer up the visual interest.

💫 All the tall cabinets are tucked-in on one side, so the layout feels easy and window light isn’t blocked.

💫 A sliding pocket door into the utility makes the most of the space.

💫 Going with timeless neutral cabinetry, paired with a soft colour on the end wall and island adds extra warmth and character.

💫 Adding the deeper colour on the bar adds contrast, helping to give the dining area its own feel.

💫 Different levels of layered lighting help to create atmosphere 😊

A couple of before & afters from our Oakwood project. It’s always fun to look back at where you began.
By removing a wall and carefully reworking the layout this kitchen & dining area has been opened-up to feel much lighter, calmer and with a seamless work flow. It feels good to spend time in - cooking, dining and relaxing.

Step inside this open-plan barn conversion in Abbots Bromley.

Originally planned as separate kitchen & utility spaces, the layout evolved during the design process into one seamless, hard-working room.

The result is a beautifully connected space that’s perfect for how the client lives, and it’s hard to imagine it any other way now.

It’s officially kitchen project planning time! If your next project is a new kitchen here are some tips we’ve learnt over the years:

If you’re replacing an existing kitchen remember to budget for all the prep work. Even if you’re keeping to a similar layout there’s usually plumbing, electrics, flooring and plastering to consider.

If you’re building an extension, plan in plenty of wall space. Windows and glass doors are lovely but you’ll need space for full height cabinets and appliances and plenty of room for storage.

The colour of your worktop is as important for bouncing light around as your cabinetry. You can have dark base cabinets and a light worktop and still maximise natural light.

Balance your countertop cabinets with how much worktop space you need. Busy kitchens will need more space to prep and serve, so open shelving and wall cabinets can work best.

Think about what doesn’t work for you now. For example: how is the flow between key areas like the sink, hob, fridge and bins; is there enough worktop space around the oven; is the mix between cupboards & drawers working well?

Design notes from our latest Hoar Cross kitchen reveal ✨
• A peninsula keeps key pathways free between sink, fridge & oven for perfect flow.
• Warm oak accents add texture and timeless charm.
• Hidden shelves within the cooker corbel keep favourite oils close at hand (and clutter out of sight).
• Open shelving breaks up a full-height run, ensuring the space feels balanced and considered.
• The reduced depth bookcase conceals a down pipe perfectly.
