Why Fragrances are so evocative 💗

Nobody can doubt the power of perfume to evoke memory. Twist open the cap of your favourite sun lotion, breathe deep your favourite kind of coffee, or catch your mother's perfume dancing through the air and instantly the mind is transported to a place, a person, a time.

While the world's best fragrance writers might disagree, there is in fact one reason for the inextricable link between scent and our past, and it is that our brains cannot actually describe smells. To compensate, we have cleverly adapted by storing our scent bank with our memory bank.

Known as our 'olfactory memory', it is the reason a whiff of a pine tree takes you back to Christmas, or the smell of freshly mown grass transports you to your favourite country garden. Our brains are instantly triggered into finding associated memories to help us identify what we are smelling.
