Farewell from BarreledOver: Closing Our Doors
Dear Friends, Family, and Loyal Customers,

It is with a heavy heart and deep reflection that we announce the closure of BarreledOver. This decision is, quite possibly, the hardest one we've ever had to make. While we managed to weather the challenges of the past year, the business hasn't grown as we had hoped. Despite putting in every ounce of effort and passion we could muster, there comes a time when you have to recognize when it's time to walk away. After much thought and consideration, that time has come for us.

BarreledOver was born from the deepest sorrow in our personal family history. The loss of Ray's dad during the first wave of the pandemic was a devastating blow, but creating this business provided a crucial outlet during what we call the 'Covid Era'. It gave us a purpose, a project to focus on, and, quite frankly, it saved us from losing our minds during those dark times.

Over these years, we've had the pleasure of meeting some truly incredible people. Our market 'family' has been a source of immense joy and support, and we will miss them dearly. Although BarreledOver is closing, we will still visit the markets from time to time, and we look forward to reconnecting with our friends and fellow artisans.

The support and help we received from so many people who believed in our vision have been overwhelming. There are too many individuals to mention by name, but please know that your contributions have not gone unnoticed. We deeply appreciate every single one of you.

This chapter of our lives has allowed us to heal as a family and make wonderful, talented friends. We are grateful for the journey and for the connections we've made along the way. Now, it's time for us to move on and leave this era behind.

Lastly, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our immediate family, friends, and of course, our customers over the last few years. Your unwavering support has been the backbone of BarreledOver, and we could not have done it without you.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Iechyd da! Cheers! Sláinte!

The Adventures of Steve the Stave: A Tale of Creativity and Sustainability

A Bright and Shiny Start

Since the excitement of the market, I bet you’ve been wondering what Steve the Stave has been up to. Well, let me take you on his latest adventure. After the hustle and bustle, Steve was so tired he went to bed super early Sunday evening. When he woke up on Monday morning, he felt as bright as a shiny bolt! He checked the emails and oversaw the morning's work, feeling rejuvenated and ready for a new challenge.

A Creative Day for Steve

Inspired by the beauty of the natural world, Steve decided to have a go at painting. As a lover of trees, he naturally chose to paint a serene forest scene. However, this time, he envisioned a tranquil nighttime setting with dark trees silhouetted against a beautiful sky and the last light of day reflected on a calm lake. Now, painting is a bit tricky for a Steve the Stave character to manage, but our resourceful Steve found a technique that worked for him. He attached a paintbrush to one of his metal bar arms using some handy duct tape and set up his canvas in a well-lit corner of the workshop.

The Joy of Painting

Steve started by painting the outline of the trees, their dark forms stark against the fading light. He used deep blues and purples to capture the richness of the night sky, adding stars that twinkled like tiny diamonds. As he painted the lake, he carefully reflected the soft oranges and pinks of the last light of day, creating a serene and magical scene. The sounds of the workshop faded into the background as Steve became absorbed in his artistic endeavor. Time flew by, and before he knew it, the whole afternoon had disappeared.

A Masterpiece Unveiled

Steve stood back to admire his work and was delighted with the beautiful picture he had created. It was a vibrant portrayal of a nighttime forest, capturing the essence of his favorite natural wonder. The dark trees stood tall and proud, their silhouettes perfectly reflected in the still lake. The sky was a masterpiece of twilight hues, and the overall scene exuded a peaceful and calming energy. Steve felt a deep sense of satisfaction and pride in his creation.

Finding the Perfect Spot

Now came the task of finding a safe place to let his masterpiece dry. As Steve pondered where to put it, he remembered his dual role—not just a character but also a fridge magnet! With no space left on the fridge and worried the humans might accidentally ruin it when they opened the door, Steve had the perfect idea. He hung his painting on the boiler, ensuring it was safe and sound. The warmth from the boiler would help the paint dry faster, too!

Reflecting on the Day

Proud as a stave could be, Steve admired his first attempt at painting. The process had been so relaxing and fulfilling that he couldn't help but drift off to sleep, dreaming of more artistic endeavors. He imagined painting landscapes from all the places he’d seen and the adventures he’d yet to embark on.

Steve’s Vision for the Future

The next morning, Steve eagerly shared his idea with the team at BarreledOver. They loved the concept and began brainstorming ways to integrate more creative projects into their business. Steve’s painting had not only been a fun and creative outlet but also a source of inspiration for the entire workshop.

The Adventures of Steve the Stave: Market Day Extravaganza
A Day Steve Had Been Waiting For
Today was the day Steve had been eagerly awaiting—market day! The vibrant hustle and bustle, the colorful stalls, and the myriad of treasures to discover made market day one of Steve's favorite times. With a spring in his step (or rather, a creak in his wooden joints), Steve headed out to explore the wonders of the market, taking a little time off from the BarreledOver stall.

FFoxy's Creations & DesignsFirst on Steve's list was Foxy's Creations. The array of brilliant travel cups caught his eye immediately. So many to choose from, each one unique in design and style. Steve admired the craftsmanship and practicality of the cups, thinking they would make the perfect gift for some of his fellow staves back at the workshop.

MMalfie & Cro.Next, Steve wandered over to the stall of Malfie and Cro. He was instantly charmed by the crochet seahorses, their intricate patterns and bright colors bringing a smile to his wooden face. The baby clothes by FFox & Cubwere equally delightful—tiny outfits that looked so soft and cuddly. Steve imagined how adorable they would look on the little ones.

AAberPrintzDragons
Continuing his exploration, Steve found himself mesmerized by the amazing creatures made by AberPrintz. Realizing they were dragons, Steve was both awed and thrilled. These dragons, with their intricate designs and friendly demeanor, were a sight to behold. Steve could hardly believe his eyes at how pretty and surprisingly approachable they were.

TTreats by Band Astral Soup
Steve’s next stop was at Treats by B, where the display of delicious cupcakes made his wooden heart skip a beat. He marveled at the beautiful decorations and imagined the delightful flavors. Moving on, he found Astral Soup's stall, which featured super cool badges that caught his eye. Each badge was a tiny piece of art, and Steve couldn’t resist picking out a few to take back to the workshop.

AAgate Oceansand BBearded taffs Jewellery & Crafts with printsThe beautiful agate ornaments by Agate Ocean were another highlight of Steve's market day. The colors and patterns within each piece of agate were mesmerizing, and Steve knew they would look stunning in the workshop. He also couldn’t resist getting a couple of mugs from The Bearded Taff, appreciating their unique designs and sturdy build.

FFunky Rice Charmsand MMy Little Jewellery WorkshopSteve was amazed by the funky rice charms—tiny pieces of rice with names written on them. It was incredible to see such intricate work on such a small scale. The jewelry from My Little Jewellery Workshop was equally enchanting, though Steve lamented not having ears to wear the cute earrings he saw.

Meeting LLee Dunning - Independent Candidate TorfaenWhile browsing the stalls, Steve met a candidate for the upcoming election named Lee. Although Steve didn’t understand politics, he found Lee to be very nice and enjoyed their brief conversation. Lee mentioned something about being independent, which Steve thought sounded quite important, even if he didn’t fully grasp the concept.

BBotanic Possessions and CCariad WoodCrafting
Steve's adventure continued as he discovered the teeny succulents from Botanic Possessions. The tiny plants, adorned with equally tiny animal skulls, were fascinating. He then admired the wood carvings, including Tarot Cards, at Cariad Wood Crafting. The craftsmanship was impressive, and Steve appreciated the beauty of each piece.

LLazy Gal Craftsand BBrainy BombsThe lovely earrings at Lazy Gal Crafts caught Steve's eye, but he humorously noted that, lacking ears, he couldn’t purchase them. Brainy Bombs' bath bombs, however, were super funky and smelled divine. Steve thought they would make perfect gifts for his human friends.

PPontnewydd Bakeryand CCoffi kitokoThe pies by Pontnewydd Bakery looked incredibly yummy, and Steve made a mental note to bring some back for the team. As for the nicest drink Steve had ever seen, he found it at Coffi Kitoko. He had never heard of an affogato before, but once he tried it, he was in heaven. The combination of coffee and ice cream was simply glorious!

Iceland and Heading Back to the Stall
Steve had heard about a place called Iceland and thought it sounded cool, but there was no time to go in today. Just as he was about to explore further, he realized he was already five minutes late getting back to the BarreledOver stall. With a quick wave to the other vendors, Steve hurried back, his heart full of joy from the day’s adventures.

Stay tuned for more tales of Steve the Stave, where every day brings a new adventure and every story highlights the magic of repurposed barrels.

our story

This began in the year that Covid 19 robbed me of my dad suddenly and unexpectedly. He used to grow and ‘breed’ his own fuschia’s, he travelled all over the country giving talks and winning prizes, he also had a healthy fondness for whiskey, every special occasion i could i would buy him a special bottle. When he passed i felt i had lost everything and i had no way of properly having a memorial due to the virus restrictions and i wanted to do something just for me i acquired one whiskey barrel with the intention of planting one of his own fuschias in it (all his grandchildren have fuschias named after them). I cut the barrel in half and started experimenting with a simple design as a practice but it came out so nicely that i was asked to make another 4....it has barrel rolled from there (couldn’t resist sorry) and I still have yet to make my own pot, but to be honest when i am making these barrels i know my dad is watching and chuckling he would have loved the connection and seen the funny side. So in a way it has been the start of a healing process... i will never not miss my dad and our conversations but i know he would be so proud of these and what I am doing. I cannot wait to show you my next projects... something different... Thank you for following/liking my page.
