MALCOLM RUMLEY ANTIQUES has been established since 1986 providing a traditional approach in the care and restoration of our clients furniture. Our family run business has built up a good reputation over the last 28 years restoring antique furniture building up a very good client base who we hope will return to us when ever they need restoration to their furniture. We also like to think that the fu

rniture that we have restored over the years will go on to bring pleasure to future generations. Antique furniture has played a part in a family's history so when I go to view a repair in a property I am only too pleased to advise the client of the history of the piece that I am looking at. This personable approach is also given when carrying out confidential valuations on single or multiple items.

Hello and welcome sometimes when we decide to go out and about visiting areas or buildings then we can come across items and study them for the beauty that they can show or we can acknowledge the skill needed to produce these items. Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire is one of these places

The castle was founded by a knight of William the Conqueror but was sold and rebuilt as it now stands by the Cavendish Family who were Royalists and therefore fought for the King, lost and went into exile in France. William Cavendish and his 2nd wife returned to England in c1660 and once again started building work which was to include the riding school for the training of horse dressage

It is this riding School that I want to talk about or mainly its roof construction. When we walk into this hall through the large impressive Oak doors, we see a large hall with white walls and a sand floor. Built out of the walls around the hall are large Oak corbels which support the oak hammer head roof which are cantilevered into the wall for support
( image B )
Now this view from the ground floor of the roof is good but when we then walk up the staircase we come across the viewing are that has been made.
( image C )
When we look into the roof then we can see the full beauty of the Carpenters work, the workmanship that has gone into the making of this roof is good and complexed look at the arched struts. Each one of these along with the rest of the roof has been morticed and tenoned and pegged together
( image D )
Each one of these will have been taken from branches that are roughly the same shape planned by Carpenters by hand to fit. The left-hand side struts and the right-hand side struts are usually pairs from the same branch
(image E )

The Carpenters have finished the roof off by carving and fitting Oak carved drop finials. The quality of the carpentry also shows on the stairs as if we look at the risers on the stairs they have been finished off with a small moulding only for the aesthetics. #

HIS IS A ROOF TO BE SEEN NOT HIDDEN AWAY

That’s all for this post, I hope you found this interesting and we will be visiting Bolsover again

Hello and welcome again, it has been a while since my last post but better late than never. We are again going to look at carpentry within industries and first we will take a look at the skills of a pattern maker to produce the mould show in the picture. Next we move to the Mills of Derbyshire and see the timber used in the frames and associated components of this machine producing cotton and then also at the spinning jenny and the timber diagonal boarded floor. the other picture shows timber used in the manufacture of this drum machine.
Lastly we move into the printing room to see how the joiner was involved with the construction of the machines and also the actual building of the room

Hello and welcome again, in this post I am going to look at how through the years the skills of carpentry’s / joiner’s have been used within different industries.
Let us start by looking at the picture of the centre post with the wooden wheel complete with the wooden replaceable cogs. These cogs all need to me made the same so that they all fit into the housing nice and tight. This post, wheel and cogs are actually driving a water pump in a windmill in Norfolk.
The next picture is of a heavy wooden frame and timber drum which was used as a winch in the slate mines of Wales. There are other industries to look at and I will cover these in my next post. Both of these manufactured items would have taken patience and time to produce along with a good skill level. The Carpenters / Joiners would also of had to work alongside other trades to produce these items.
