The second job request from my new customer, after the bookcase on my previous post, was to design and make a storage area to fill / utilise a blank open alcove alongside an inglenook fireplace. The job had to fit with the age of the building and compliment the dark wood beams and mantle timber in the room. I made this façade in solid oak, mouldings and details in a Jacobean style and then stained / coloured / waxed the whole to give age and be in keeping with the property. Fitted with a large over shelf to close the area in, the sides and base of the build had to be scribed and planed in to fit the uneven walls and stone floor. The customers were very happy with both jobs, thank you John & Jane for asking me to make these for your home.

A new customer came to me with a couple of different job requests for their older period home which they recently purchased. The first was a built in bookcase for a blocked off doorway recess at the foot of the staircase. Made in joinery grade plywood with hardwood details and hardwood surround, the case full of books gives interest and life to a once blank and empty space.
Brush painted for a traditional finish with Farrow & Ball Wimborne white paint.

Box pelmets.

A pair of bronze painted / gilded and rotten stone dust aged box pelmets. The carcasses are made in 18mm birch plywood with hardwood mouldings and detail. Finished with Liberon bronze metallic paint, Liberon gilding crème and aged with rotten stone dust.

A Regency style box pelmet. Made the same way as the above bronze pelmets with resin mouldings for detail. Finished with Farrow and Ball Charleston grey.

I am able to make any size pelmet to any design / finish required.

Secondary glazing for Georgian stone mullion windows.

A selection of pictures taken during the fit out of complete secondary glazing of a large Georgian house. The property is fitted with old metal framed crittal windows with cylinder blown thin glass which do not hold back the cold!

Made in both a natural oak and a Farrow & Ball painted finish. The grand rooms were fitted with oak, bedroom sets were painted.

Made in a butterfly style opening operation, hinged off a central vertical with all fixings hidden by decorative resin patera boss caps. These units provide effective secondary glazing whilst being easily opened for cleaning or opening outside windows. All fitted using quality Simonswerk brass hinges.

Secondary glazing gives very effective heat retention in a room, cuts window condensation and provides sound proofing from outside noise. They provide a much more comfortable environment in any room.

I can make units that are in keeping with the style of a property, enhance the look of the window and still be discreet with minimal visible framing when viewed from outside.

I am able to make secondary glazing in a variety of designs to fit any type of window, casement / mullion or sash etc. I make hinged or lift out systems, in oak or any desired timber, painted or natural / stained / oiled finish.

I glaze in toughened or acoustic laminated glass in a variety of thicknesses for greater heat holding and sound proofing.

Removable oak secondary glazing.

This is one of three similar windows I was asked to make secondary glazing for. Made in oak and stained / finished to the customers choosing. Black iron turnbuckle hardware supplied by the customer, holds all the units in place. Made to be lifted out on windows that are seldom opened. Made to be removed in the warmer months and for occasional cleaning.

Three French polished side tables.
A trio of tables all looking sun bleached and worn. All were originally finished with a lacquer or other modern finish. These were stripped, sanded, stained, grain filled and then French polished with a warm tone button polish. Finished with Fiddes wax, the light refracts beautifully through the polish to show off the character of the wood.

I am able to revive and polish any furniture you have that is in need of attention.

Always good to tick off a larger project.....
I have just finished this door and frame, over 2 metres tall and 55mm thick, heavy! I tweaked the design to give better overall proportions compared to the original.

Made from iroko, all mortice and tenon joinery, fitted with 8mm toughened bevelled glass. Good snug fit onto aquamac compression seals with stainless steel weather bar set into the threshold.

Finished with Johnstone’s micro porous oil based Stormshield on the outside, Osmo amber & clear on the inside, a good colour match to the existing pitch pine mouldings and overhead window framing.

Several people who saw this thing in the making were convinced I had the measurements wrong - ‘it can’t be that tall?’ I’m over 6 feet and this thing dwarfs me!

Timbersource - my new supplier!
Since the start of the pandemic, so many timber merchants have permanently moved away from allowing ‘self selection’, including my previous supplier. Timbersource, near Shepton Mallet, still offer this facility.

Every job is only as good as the timber you use, you have to pick it out in person to ensure the quality rather than settle for random stock being delivered.

My first visit this morning, good stock levels, helpful staff and plenty of straight planks to choose from. This load of iroko mainly selected for a front door & frame and a couple of other smaller projects.

A project in my own house. Recessed spaces either side of a fire surround with a door to the left leading into the kitchen. The idea was to add interest to these areas and conceal the door into the wall.

I made and fitted the wainscot panelling in the room before battening / boarding the upper walls in the recesses to make all square and true. Andrew Martin Library wallpaper was then used to decorate.

All mouldings / cornice / over panelling and shelf edging was machined from oak and then finished to a mid tone aged appearance.

The door is four inches thick and eighty kilos in weight, made to a traditional four panel pattern on the reverse side. Mounted on heavy duty hinges with an automatic soft close mechanism hidden in the top edge.

Aside from making new, I can also restore and repair the old. This was brought to me a while ago, a Georgian settee which had suffered a frame break. The upholstery had to be peeled back to give access to the inside. A two section oak knee (for strength) was made and fitted to brace the frame. Once all back together, a touch up with paint and stain and the repair is invisible.
