‘Sparchaeology’ (no not that 👆🏻) may or may not be a word that myself and a client made up a couple of days ago. We are defining it as ‘the study of residual tinsels on a client’s head, identifying origin date by colour and/or hair growth’. She arrived for her appointment and I commented that she was already looking quite healthy in the sparklage department, to which she cheerily replied ‘oooh yes. The dark blue ones are from Christmas 2024, the turquoise ones are from this time last year - remember I got them for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival - and the pink ones (of which there were MANY) are from Christmas 2025!’
So I had a rummage and a giggle and we agreed that a spot of Sparchaeology was a very entertaining start to her latest appointment!

‘Chrome hair’ by for has taken my feed by storm! I’m usually a bit (!) of a purist about Sparkle application but credit where it’s due, this is so creative! And I’m not the least bit sad about hair tinsel hitting the Paris Fashion Week runways. About time!!

I thought my first post of 2026 should be ALL ABOUT ME! 😂😂 Just jokes, but I did want to say hello 👋🏻, and introduce myself to anyone who has hopped onboard recently. Hello! I’m Sian (pronounced Shahn). Here are ten random numerical (why not 🤷🏽‍♀️) ‘fun’ facts about me:
- I have played 1,384 games of Wordle 🤓
- I’ve lived at 24 addresses (most recent one for 6 years, which I believe is a record 💪🏻)
- When I (fairly recklessly) married Mr Sparkle in 2010 we had known each other for 260 days. By some miracle it has worked and we have now racked up 5893 days together! ❤️
- We’ve accumulated 2 daughters, 2 dogs and 4 cats 🤼‍♀️🐾
- I am shortly to complete my 51st trip around the sun. It’s my favourite journey and never gets old (oh, the irony!) ☀️
- I have half a thyroid gland 🩻
- I have 7 tattoos (9 if you include my eyebrows 😁)
- Out of my immediate family of 7 including myself, 5 of us are left-handed 👈🏻
- I am 5’10” (178cm) tall 🙄
- I have 22 days left to file my tax return, and I’ve done this instead 😬

Thank you, 2025. It’s been a blast! Here are a few slides I put together to summarise what’s been going on at Sparkle HQ over the last 12 months.
On a personal level, this year has not been easy BUT life isn’t meant to be and, my goodness, I’m so so SO very blessed to have my sweet little business and you lovely, gorgeous lot to be grateful for every single day ✨💖✨

So my Halloween ‘costume’ ended up being more of a prop, and a fairly pants one at that BUT one and a half perfectly decent glitter curtains got sacrificed to make it so I’m posting it.
If you can’t tell - and you’re totally forgiven because it’s a shocking portrayal - this is my Halloween nightmare. Sparkle HQ being haunted by a giant microbead hair tinsel installation. Mwahahahahasaaaa 👻✨

Sparkly Hair was a thing in the 1850’s?! This is Empress Eugenie de Montijo (painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in 1854), wife of Napoleon III, friend to Queen Victoria and supporter of the Sparkly Hair movement!

Already something of a fashion influencer of the time, in 1853 she (and five other ladies) appeared at a Paris theatre with glittering silver powder in her hair and kicked off a trend that was quickly picked up by Rimmel of London, who created a Golden Hair Powder that was advertised in the Illustrated London News that same year. The ‘captivating effects’ of this glittering hair trend were still being talked about in Punch in 1857, where it was said it ‘appears as though a sunbeam had been broken into bits, and scattered among the tresses’. In 1865 more brands were advertising their golden hair powders but those products available to the masses were made of bronze rather than the crushed gold or silver leaf favoured by the upper echelons of society and actually served to make the wearers hair look ‘dirty’.

So it would seem that sparkly hair has been trending for longer than we realise, and evidently quality matters as much now as it did then! ✨
