Show Garden Spotlight: TรR : A Welsh Landscape โจ
An evocative Show Garden that tells the story of Wales through land, water and people, designed by Nick Anthony and built by Sam Rees.
TรR, the Welsh word for land, captures a slice of Walesโ waterways and forests, centred on a sculptural, boulder-formed pond with flowing water. Through layered planting, natural materials and integrated water features, the garden creates an immersive experience while demonstrating how high-quality design can also be achieved in real-world spaces ๐
Rooted in a strong sense of place and inspired by ideas of belonging and nostalgia, the design reflects landscapes shaped by industry and renewed through nature. Created with a real hillside setting in mind, it also highlights how sustainable, future-focused garden design can be both practical and long-lasting.
The space incorporates a wildlife-focused ecosystem pond alongside natural, locally sourced materials, while features such as deadwood habitats and bug houses actively support biodiversity. Rainwater harvesting is integrated into the design, and construction methods have been carefully considered to ensure reuse and long-term longevity ๐
The planting combines layers of spring colour with grasses, ferns and flowering perennials, subtly reflecting Welsh identity. Marsh-inspired species evoke wetland habitats, and perimeter trees create a Celtic woodland backdrop, with a raised boardwalk. After the show, the design will be relocated to Glasbren CIC.
