Woodlark

Woodlark Wooden Toys For Modern Children. We are a family business with a small garden workshop who produce toys and furniture to order.

With strong backgrounds in Art and Carpentry, we aim to produce contemporary classics that will not only be cherished but will last a lifetime. We place a strong focus on our end products and avoid mass production methods that can often lead to inconsistencies and overlooked flaws. All of our items are individually handmade and finished and our quality control is strict. Some of our items are made

with sustainably sourced, native timbers and some are salvaged antiques that have been broken down for their materials and reimagined into other items. We offer a range of toys and furniture made to order and we also undertake commissioned pieces upon request.

I keep being told recently that I should start posting here again so here's something pretty for a Monday night...

Custom made doors and drawer fronts, custom boiler housing and new cupboards in the alcove. Spray finished in Farrow and Ball, Raw Tomatillo (green), Shallot (pink) and Babouche (yellow).

It's truly incredible to see how such a change can occur in a space with such a minor update!

The customer is away for a few days and has so far only seen pictures, fingers crossed she likes it because I know I do!

A Rear Dormer loft conversion had been internally clad in shuttering grade Ply, visibly screwed to the wall and given a light Oak stain, joints between boards had huge gaps and had been rounded over exposing the core of the ply which was full of holes! This despite an architect's spec for seamless Birch Ply. 🤦

Coming into the project at such a late stage was was always going to be a challenge; no idea of the existing buildup and all electrics second fixed with fascias on meant some serious undoing before I could even think about putting it right.

What followed was 3 intense weeks of work; high 30 degree heat lugging 18 and 25mm sheets of ply up winding staircases to a third floor, discovering new problems daily including an ensuite toilet that'd been left an inch from the wall and not fixed down (don't ask how I discovered this 😂).

In the end, over 400 cuts, custom made birch ply architraves, bespoke custom cabinetry, some really cool safety solutions (customer has an almost 2 year old) and a stunning recycled cork floor have come together to create a truly beautiful space.

It's light, bright, airy and fresh; the pale birch walls combined with sharp lines and a simple clean layout that has fantastic flow really give you a feeling of calm whilst simultaneously retaining a cosy warm feeling through the warmer contrasting tones of the floor... this space is going to be incredible to wake up in on a cold winter morning!

Massive thanks to East Kent Timber Ltd who supplied all of the sheet material; stunning as always!

provided not only brilliant aesthetics through his design but also accurate drawings that really helped me with late night quantity calculations. Tom has a really fabulous eye and was extremely helpful with all and any info I needed at short notice!

A fantastic project recently completed; following some significant hiccups created by the original contractor using the incorrect Ply and staining it to hide the screw holes, a complete overhaul was needed!

3 weeks of Intense activity, over 400 cuts and a myriad of bespoke joinery later and it's done...

Big thanks to ... you have an incredible eye and the details provided in your design schematics made my late night QS sessions a breeze! 😂

It's been a while, eh!

Woodlark took a bit of a different direction this time last year; after receiving a furniture comission we suddenly found ourselves inundated with requests for restorations and bespoke furniture items that meant our toys took a back burner and we had to learn to paint properly...

A year in and still busier than ever we've now restored more sash windows than you can shake a stick at and we are breaking up our time with a variety of other jobs whenever we get the opportunity... Here are some photos of some of our more enjoyable projects over the last 12 months ...

We don't think a photo could ever do this one justice..., this took hundreds of attempts and it still only tells half the story. With a solid black walnut body that looks like chocolate and simple, bold inlays made from yellow Iroko and off white Lime, this absolute stunner of a little robot has been made for a truly wonderful friend of ours and we are really quite honored that we got to do it!

Now to put our feet up and make the most of a gloriously sunny Bank Holiday!

We are big believers in the importance of sustainability when it comes to toys; their frequently disposable nature makes them a potential minefield of unnecessary waste which we would rather avoid where possible... oh, and we love bikes!

When our eldest spotted this by the side of the road, daddy audibly groaned at the thought of how much work was needed to get it looking good again. However, after a quick trip to b&q to let the boy choose the paint, a new Sapelle seat was cut and as a team we disassembled, cleaned, painted and put back together...

Now, does anyone have any tips as to how to remove a toddler from a bike when they don't want to get off? Only, it's day 4 and he's starting to stink.

We've been quietly sitting on this one waiting for the recipients birthday so we could show you what we think may be our coolest custom robot to date! (So much so that Nick has duplicated it to keep one for himself!)

Made using solid pieces of Sapelle and Lime that have been spliced through the full depth of the Oak body to achieve a striking yet simple lightning bolt which has then been further detailed using Tiny Land stain to achieve an almost iridescent colour scheme.

Our custom robots are always available to order, and with prices starting at just £60 they make wonderful personalised gifts that you can be confident will be treasured for a lifetime!

Fear can be a fascinating inspiration...

He's never known why but Nick's always been slightly afraid of moths... particularly the flipping massive ones that sound like helicopters when they fly across the room. 😱

Despite this, he frequently works into the early hours with the workshop door wide open and more flying insects keeping him company than you can shake a stick at...

Some people are weird, right!?

Anyway, this is part of our nursery decor series and we love it!!!

We had both of our favourite product testers out for yesterday's photography session; they're always helpful 🤔... honest?! 😂

Greyson spent most of the day diving in and out of hollowed logs , scrabbling through undergrowth, climbing rocks, trees and generally enjoying some freedom. Orla enjoyed looking up at the dappled light of the tree canopies and the sounds of the birds all around us.

Utterly blissful family day combining work and pleasure!

Who am I kidding, this is nothing like real work 😂🥰😂!
