🐝Winter Wildlife Gardening Tips 🐝

It's really important to look after wildlife in your garden during the toughest time of the year.

🌼Early flowers: We plant things that will feed any early pollinaters - some queen bees can be out & about as early as March so it's really important to provide them with some food. Hellebores, Snowdrops, Sweet Box, Witch Hazel, Dandelions & Crocuses are great things to cultivate in your garden.

🍐 Prune your fruit trees: Apples & pears should be pruned in winter while they're dormant - that helps to keep the plant healthy & ensure lots of delicious fruit in summer!

🐞 Leave long stems: Insects such as Ladybirds hibernate in hollow stems - we always leave a bit of stem on the plant when tidying up, & we relocate cut stems to a secluded part of the garden so critters can shelter in them.

πŸͺ·πŸͺ· Why do organic gardeners prune roses in winter?πŸͺ·πŸͺ·

πŸ‘‰ Looking after plant health without chemicals means using techniques like pruning & organic fertiliser to make plants strong enough to withstand disease & insect attacks.

πŸ‘‰ We prune roses in to an open, goblet shape to allow lots of airflow to combat rose black spot. Black spot is a fungal disease which spreads by water splashes. This is done in winter while the rose is dormant.

πŸ‘‰ Pruning in the right way encourages the rose to grow in to a shape that encourages lots of flowers, a well pruned rose will be overflowing with blooms in summer!

Still flowering in High Peak in October!

All these gorgeous plants are still flowering right through October - not forgetting flame coloured Acers bringing autumnal vibes.

We carefully plan our planting to give flowers all year round - yep, even in winter!

Pic 2: Dahlia 'Bishop of Landoff' grown from seed at our nursery.
Pic 3: Geranium, Snapdragons & Dahilas

🌷 It's bulb season! Planting bulbs under your perennial plants lets you layer in space and time.

🌼Plant snowdrops, & spring & autumn crocuses under deciduous trees - they'll flower before the canopy grows in spring making the garden come alive earlier & providing valuable food for early pollinators 🐝

🌺 Mini daffodils are not only cute, but the leaves are easily covered by later growing plants, so you don't have to cut them off when they get scraggly - less mess in the garden & healthier bulbs.

Alliums look amazing planted inside a clump like geraniums or mollis, they grow taller giving you a focal point.

Buzz for the algorithm ;)

🐞 Cottage Garden Design Tips: Work the edges! 🐞

Soft edges are a classic feature of cottage gardens. I'm always trying to mix hard & soft materials, & blur the lines to give them that romantic feel.

🌻 Pic 1: Cor Ten planters have a coating on the outside that rusts, so you get that antique feeling. Planted up here with trailing Fuchsia, Black Medic & our own peat free Snapdragons.

🌻 Pic 2: Potentilla flowers for months on end & is gorgeous at the front of a border trailing on to a path. It can even cope with being walked on!

🌻 Pic 3: Corner planter with Salvia, Nepeta, pink Roses & the crazy Thalictrum whose flowers are tiny purple globes.

🌻 Autumn Colour! 🌻

🐞Yes even in High Peak you can have something in flower all year round. We've got Sunflowers, Cosmos, Roses, Potentilla & Nasturtiums all still going strong in lots of gardens we care for.

🐞 All the annuals - Sunflowers, Nastrutiums & Cosmos - were grown by us, peat free & organic in Buxton (so they're tough enough to withstand our crazy weather!).

🐞 All that is, apart from the really pretty Cosmos in picture 4, which were grown from seed by the brilliant Maggie who is 10 & yet already a super skillful gardener! πŸ₯°

Pic 1: Cosmos attracting butterflies to the garden.
Pic 2: Nastrutiums tumbling out of a cor-ten planter
Pic 3: Dramatic mix of spiky crocosmia with big round Nasturtium leaves - they're edible too!
Pic 4: Gorgeous pink roses still going strong, with Cosmos & wildflowers behind.
Pic 5: Massive Sunflowers! They always make me happy - that's why it's our logo!

Just because we're in High Peak doesn't mean we can't be inspired by hotter climes.

I love using romantic grasses like Stipa that move in the breeze, & adding a bit of autumn colour by planting big swathes of Rudbeckia.

The plant at the front of the first photo is Erigeron, which one of my lovely customers introduced me to. It's Mexican so you might think it would struggle in Derbyshire, but it grows like a w**d! It's so cute & simple, it works really well in a cottage style garden.

Not strictly gardening, but I raided the cut flower patch yesterday & made these. They're making me happy! πŸ’

Absolutely adore how this border turned out. I love it when people aren't afraid of some bright colours!
