Piles and piles of scrap wood everywhere. This is what our workshop come to.

If you work with wood you will relate with this for sure.

To get rid of all of those left overs we did a little bit of research and came up with some Ideas.

These trays were our first choice. Different sizes, diferent shapes and diferrent finishes, but all really beautifull in our opinion.
We love the grain and colours of the wood and how the finishes make them stand out.

Stay tuned because we'll come up with more ideas to make all of that scrap wood desappear from the workshop!😉

All trays costing £15

My nan is an avid gardener and is in her garden most days. So when her birthday came around and I was thinking of something I could build her, a planter seemed to make the most sense.

This is quite a simple but effective design. Everything used to make this was recycled materials (except the nails and oil).😁

First I cleaned up the wood and cut it to size, with 45° angle cuts made on ends. I added small batons on the inside, which I glued and nailed in place to hold the box in shape and give it plenty of strength. With some simple square feet and a soft wood fame around the top I completed the look. To seal and finish it off I used our favourite. Danish oil, of course!

🎁Happy birthday Nan!🎁
Hope you enjoy your gift and plant some beautiful flowers in it.

I’ve seen people doing resin waves on youtube so many times that I couldn’t wait to try it myself. So I put the fear of doing a really big mess aside and gave it a go.

I knew that it wouldn’t be as easy as it seems on the videos, but for my first time I think I did a pretty good job. Beginner's luck for sure! 😉

I love how they turned up.

This flip taught me something important about painting furniture...

Let me tell you what happened!😊

When I started this flip I intended to finish it quite quickly. The piece was in a very good condicion, but something went wrong.

After I sealed it, I noticed some yellow spots. The yellowing could have been the wood bleeding through the paint as I didn't prime the piece or the lacquer pulling up the underlying tannins from the wood, again because I didn't prime and because the paint I used is very porous.

I decided to start all over again (Usual of me🙃!), although I didn't need to, because when using a water-based sealer, you can prime over it and do the whole process without having to sand it down.
I just figured it out later.😔

I sanded the piece, applyed Boss by Dixie Belle to prevent it from bleeding and instead of using Lacquer as a top coat for the painted part, I used wax.

This piece taught me 2 lessons:

-In doubt always apply a prime, especially when you’re painting with lighter colours, althought the wood can still bleed throught dark colours as well sometimes.

-With light colours be careful when sealing it because some top coats pull up the underlying tannins from the wood making some spots turn yellow.

Be wise and do some research before you take any step if you are not sure of what to do and in doubt always prime your piece to save you some trouble later.

Always learning...😉

Christmas is almost here!
So exciting!🎅

Last year, as we didn’t want a traditional Christmas Tree🎄, because we wanted to be more environmental friendly, we decided to make one out of tree branches. It came out really cute, but very crooked.

This year we decided to make a new one, but this time with a bit more thought and planning. It came out so pretty and sturdy that it will stay our Christmas Tree🎄 for as long as it lasts.

We used pallet wood, nails and glue to make it and gave it a coat of lacquer to finish it.

With such a simple and effective design it only took us an afternoon to finish. Quick and easy!

🌲If you want one! Let us know.🎄

My most favourite piece so far!

This table was an upgrade from my previous piece. I enjoyed doing the carving and resin so much that I just had to do another one.

Although this table was in better condition than the last one, it still required a lot of heavy sanding and attention.

The design is an old drawing of mine that I had drawn many years ago. It is again based around the yin yang but with two ‘simplified’ dragons.

I chose to paint the legs and all the underside of the table black, mainly to heighlight the table top and bring the attention of the eye to the dragons. I belive it aslo gives the table a lot more depth and clean looking finish.

When I decided that this dresser would be my next project I never thought it would take me so long to finish it.

This piece was painted in white, so I had to strip off all the paint. Underneath that paint there was a really damaged structure. I had to fill a bunch of holes and after sanding it I had to fill more and more holes, over and over again, until eventually I filled them all.

Well, I guess this is part of the process of upcycling. If this was a piece of furniture in perfect condition, I wouldn’t have to restore it, right?😁

As the top was too damaged, I decided to take it off and make a new one and leave it in raw wood to contrast nicely with the lovely colour I chose, Hampton Olive by Dixie Belle. This was the first time I used Dixie Belle paints and specifically, silk all-in-one mineral paint and I loved it. The coverage and the smooth finish are amazing.

To play a little bit with the design I ended up stencilling the sides of the drawers. Definitly something to repeat in future projects. For the Handles I chose raw wood to complement the top.

Hope you enjoy the finish product as much as I do.
