A little transformation from just before Christmas. Recovered and refurbished with a newly hand-sprung seat. Free from the PVC this incredibly comfortable family heirloom chair can now continue to give joy to it's inhabitants!

What's in a draft-stopper?

Well I can't speak for all of them but mine are filled with lots of natural goodness. I use a combination of soft, fluffy wool for the insulation and buckwheat husks to keep them weighted to the floor. Working with these materials can get messy but I have worked out a method to ensure they behave - and also stay separate to make repairs or end of life recycling easier. That said it will be a while before you'd need to do that as they are made from a fabulous hard wearing wool fabric.

Join me in my workshop in the village of Easter Compton, near Cribbs Causeway in Bristol. You'll be part of a small group and learn lots of sewing and stuffing skills during a relaxed day. Too Many Draft excluders?

It's getting a bit chilly so probably not!

A few years ago I made a small batch run of these stripy draft-stoppers for a couple of Christmas stalls. They went like hotcakes. This year, I thought I'd invite people to come and make their own. They are good fun, you can do it in a day and make it to the length you need. No sewing experience necessary.
They are full of lots of lovely natural fillings and I'll show you some tips to make them look lovely and professional- then you can make more and give them away as Christmas presents!

Absolutely delighted to have been accepted as a Fully Certified Member of the Guild of Traditional Upholsterers after taking the exam (during the wonderful ) on Friday 🎉

The Guild is such a fantastic and friendly group of Upholsterers who really care about the craft of traditional upholstery, keeping standards high and passing on knowledge to the people within it. I originally joined as a Friend and went along to one of their AGM events (more fun than it sounds) - I was so inspired by the incredible work of the people I met that it became a bit of a dream to one day get fully certified... 

Roll on a few years I became a Journeyman - went on research trips to historic houses and fabric producers, seen behind the scenes of the Royal household upholstery workshop, taken part in workshops and got to be part of a very active and helpful What's app group- all opportunities that wouldn't otherwise have been accessible to me and have helped in me finally getting my pin! 

I can't recommend joining enough - go and have a look...

Now I need to find somewhere safer to keep my pin and get back to the bench!

A little behind the scenes insight into the design development of the recent foot stool project I worked on.
Through the process I trialled a number of different materials and techniques before settling on the final ideas. The first few images show some of the 'experiments' and the final few shots are the finished piece in progress....
