Oak | Leather | Copper
Carved | Molded | Pressed

A door designed to answer a few 'would that work' questions that have been knocking around in my head for awhile. An exploration into new materials, processes and seeing what's possible. A fairly successful first outing, with some lessons learnt, but more testing required into how material thickness etc affects things. The first step in a longer term ambition to take furniture beyond just wood 👀.

Dating as far back as the 14th Century, linenfold is a traditional carving style used to decorate interior panelling and doors of distinguished buildings - example on last slide seen on a visit to

Whilst probably not befitting of my vernacular 1700s workers cottage, using traditional craft/materials/construction as much as possible is integral to the renovation, as well as putting my own spin on them. So here's my rendition on a linenfold carving... taking a slightly more sculptural direction than the traditional style, in trying to make the 'fabric' appear hung up and draped/twisting around the doors ring handle.

Hand carved. Oak from a sawmill 20mins away. Tongue and groove planks secured together with dovetail battens and braces. Raw finish

Knock, knock...

Who’s there?

Wood.

Wood who?

Wood you please open the door?

Tapered sliding dovetail battens to keep this door flat whilst allowing seasonal movement.

The 6 category trophies, split between adults and children's book types. Designed to have the same characteristics as the grand prizes but a simpler, more batch friendly version.

Despite being batch made, they are each unique given the organic nature of hand carving and the different coloured info discs. The UV printed discs (thanks again to .laser for the quick turnaround 🙌) provided a really nice contrast against the wood and brought in links to the awards other branding.

The grand prizes. Requested to be bold and substantial so they'd be clearly visible on stage and in photographs. At 45x20x15cm and ~10kg I think that was achieved, plus the judges got a little workout carrying them about 💪💪

Great to see them on stage being presented to the winning authors last week and receive positive feedback from the organisers:

"Just want to say a MASSIVE. MASSIVE! Thank you for your work on these trophies and congratulate you. They were universally loved by everyone at the event and every single winner told me personally how proud they were to own one."

First project coming off the new *nearly finished* workbench...

An old piece of 3x12" Elm rafter was left in here when I moved in. It probably supported this workshop roof at some point in the past 200 years so nice it's got a 2nd life as the split top for the workbench in here now. Heavy duty, sand filled, plywood base with some old vices salvaged from my dad and grandpas garages. Slight upgrade from the MDF sheet on scaffold legs I've been using to date!
