Our Founder, Karen didn't start The Residence because she wanted to rent out desks.

She started it because she knew what it felt like to work alone!

The freedom of running your own business is incredible. But the isolation? It creeps in quietly… then becomes deafening.

No one to sound decisions out with. Motivation dipping, not because you don't care, but because you're carrying everything on your own.

That was her. Working from home, loving what she did, but missing people.

Laura left us last year.....🥹

the sunny climate of Dubai, was calling her and her family, and we were equally sad, and thrilled for her!

but we knew......

we had a big hole to fill....

So, we took our time searching for someone truly special to join The Residence, and we are absolutely thrilled to introduce you to Holly, our brand new Community & Events Manager! 🎉

Holly is already the heartbeat of our space, and honestly, watching her take her place, front and centre, is total confirmation, that we made the right choice!

Her days are wonderfully varied.

One moment she's planning a networking event, the next she's welcoming a new member, giving a tour to someone about to find their new work home, or calmly solving a last-minute tech crisis with a smile on her face.

Her role covers everything from community building and event management to day-to-day operations and member experience, but at the heart of it all is one simple mission: making sure every single person who walks through our doors feels genuinely welcome, supported, and part of something special.

Because at The Residence, we don't just offer desks , we build community with daily intention and framework.

Karen, our Founder, didn’t set up The Residence Coworking because she wanted desks and WiFi.

She set it up because she knew what it feels like to work alone.

When you run your own business or your a freelancer, the freedom is incredible, she was thrilled to be out of the city, doing her own thing.

But…

The isolation crept in. Quietly at first. Then it became deafening.

Days pass without real conversation. Decisions sit heavy because there’s no one to sound them out with. Motivation dips, not because you don’t care, but because you’re carrying everything on your own. And let’s face it she loves people and a good natter 🤣

That was her experience of working alone, at home.

And it’s why The Residence Coworking exists.

Productivity conversations often focus on focus, discipline and time management. What they miss is this: People don’t do their best work in isolation. she learnt the hard way.

We've come to understand that’s a big part of why coworking is so successful; it’s about the who, not just the where.

Our members are freelancers and business owners who love what they do. But working alone day after day takes its toll. Isolation drains energy far quicker than a busy café ever could.

At The Residence, people are surrounded by others who are switched on.

For years I did what a lot of people around here do, I got up early, squeezed onto a train into London, grabbed an overly expensive coffee and spent my days on the trading floors, which I loved, btw!

The work was demanding, the commute was draining and expensive, but I totally loved the buzz of the office and the people around me.

Eventually the commute won.

I decided I wanted my time and my life back.

I left the City, set up my own business as a Virtual Assistant and started working from home.

At first it felt brilliant. No trains. No timetable. My rules.

But then I realised, I missed people. I missed the banter, the birthday celebrations and the bloody funny stories we shared over our desks about nights out, weekend antics and the monotonous meeting memos.

I realised I didn't need a desk. I needed mates.

Right on cue, a renovated barn near my home came up for rent.

It was bright, beautiful but far too big for one chatty Karen with a laptop.

But I could see it.

💡 People at desks.
💡 Cups of tea and cake.
💡 Conversations in the kitchen.
💡 That feeling of walking into a place where you belong.

Before I could even type Ikea into Google, I had the keys and had opened my first coworking space in Newport just outside Saffron Walden, Hertfordshire.

What started as a solution to my own loneliness has grown into The Residence, version 2.

Over the past eight years we have upgraded everything: the barn, the furniture, the layout, the coffee, the tech.

The space is now custom built and professionally designed, with countryside views and all the practical things you need to get work done.

But the heart of it has not changed.

I still believe a workspace should give you three things

❤️ A place to get serious work done.
💙 A community of people who get what your life is like.
💛 A sense that you are not building your business on your own.

Every day I watch people walk in tired, distracted or a bit unsure of themselves and leave with energy, ideas and new confidence.

Us Karens get a bad rap but I am not out to fix the name.

It’s tough out there!

Everyone is chasing more leads, more sales, more connections.

That’s why social media marketing has become so big, right?

But business growth needs feeding.

And too many people are trying to survive on noise alone.

We’re all fighting to be heard online.

Algorithms change.

Attention spans shrink.

And suddenly you’re working harder just to stand still.

This is the bit people often miss about The Residence Coworking and coworking in general.

You only really understand it once you experience it.

Coworking can be a powerful source of work.

💡 Not a short term fix.
💡 Not a quick win.
💡 The long game.

It’s about investing in relationships. Showing up. Sharing ideas. Supporting each other when there’s nothing immediate to gain. And, the data supports it too.
