A Personal Tribute
On March 20th 2025 we lost our beloved dad George after a long battle with illness.
Dad left Cyprus in 1964 as a 22 year old and arrived in Birmingham with little money and a young family.
He quickly set about trying to make a better life for himself and family by converting an old Victorian house on the Coventry Rd in Small Heath into a shop where he could sell used items of furniture. He worked tirelessly, rising in the early hours of the morning to reupholster chairs and settees before delivering them to customers in the evenings. I often remember waiting excitedly in the late evenings for dad and my brother Andrew to get home after deliveries and I was especially happy when they brought back some fish and chips too!
Dad was successfully able to move on from retailing second hand furniture to new furniture and in the process introduced new beds and mattresses to the business. He was quick to spot trends and could see that the bed and sofa market were growing fast so adapted his business accordingly, the fruits resulting in a better life for himself and family.
As 2 young boys working next to him, my brother and I were able to experience everything first hand, and in the process gained a natural affinity for the world of retail furniture.
In 1991 I was able to branch off from dad's business and open a shop specialising only in beds and mattresses before moving to Becketts Farm as Hollywood Beds in 2019.
Dad taught us so much, things that we didn't even realise were important at the time. They served him well then and they serve us well now in the way we run the business.
So thank you dad, we couldn't have done it without you.
