Don’t miss your last collections of the year!
A further reminder that the last green-lidded bin collections for a three month period are at the end of November…
If you're lucky enough to have your own garden and have been putting off a garden clean-up please be aware that the last collection of green-lidded bins in Bedford Borough for this year will be at the end of November.
Each year, we stop collecting green-lidded bins from 1 December, restarting again on 1 March the following year. General waste and recycling collections will continue during this time, keep an eye out online for the changes to bin collections over Christmas.
The vast majority of people who use this service produce far less green waste during these colder months, however, we appreciate there are still some people who will need to dispose of their green waste. Over winter you can continue to take garden waste to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (aka the tidy tip!) on Barkers Lane, Bedford.
It's unlikely you'll have any restrictions if you are using your family car to drop off normal household and garden waste but before visiting do check online to see if you need a permit and find opening hours and further information about the site.
While garden waste collections are suspended over the winter months, why not give home composting a go. It's easy to make compost with fallen leaves, cuttings from around the garden, and even uncooked food waste such as fruit and veg peelings. It'll help provide you with rich compost to use around the garden and all for free!
We offer compost bins at subsidised prices for residents, to help get you started at home.
Those who continue to produce large amounts of green waste over winter months may consider using a waste carrier. If you do, please double-check their waste carrier license with the Environment Agency. Unfortunately, cowboy collectors may dump your waste in a field or layby somewhere and you will be fined if it’s traced back to you.
