This week Jarvis wants to talk about the design process. It’s not as easy as having an idea and making it. The idea and drafting normally takes a few goes. Once the design is in the bag, then it’s all about test pieces to get the fit just right. Then it’s prototyping which could see right back at the design stage. If prototyping goes well, you might get to start to test the print settings. This ensures you get the perfect finish. So it get be a long drawn out process.

Jarvis has spent a few weeks working on this. The cinema in the Campervan certainly needed a refit. The essential parts were just stuck and wedged onto the remains of an unused tv mount. He even added a place for the projectors usb , which was left at home during the last trip. I do have some ideas on how to improve the diesel heater remote control, but that’s for a different time.

So I was having a chat with Jarvis and we started talking about beer. I like a nice bottle of Belgium beer every now and again. We continued to chat about how many different one’s there are, and all the interesting bottle caps.
Jarvis asked if I kept any of the caps and what I did with them. When I told him I kept them in an old carrier bag in the back of the kitchen draw where things go to die. He was not impressed, and said he would come up with a better solution.
I’m impressed with what he’s done. A display board for the bottle caps. And it’s magnetic, so you can put it on your fridge. He’s also put wall mounts on it. This would look great in a home bar or man cave. In fact a perfect gift for the man in your life. Hang on isn’t it Father’s Day soon.

This week Jarvis has been working on demountable fork cages and mounts, for bike packing. The biggest challenge was making a mount that would fit the Surlys. The bottom mounting bolt on the Surly can’t be used on the brake side. And if you raise the mount up to the top 2 bolts, the release lever is fouled by the bottom bolt. And the rack mount bolt on the centre of the fork stops the cage sliding on and off. Jarvis eventually worked out a perfect solution. And everything now works perfectly.

Now Jarvis is toilet trained, he’s all about self improvement. This week he’s been making parts to improve his filament holders. A flip up top for the main unit and a side shelf for his high temperature unit. I think he’s made a good job of these, even if it did take him 18 an a half hours.

This week Jarvis has been making more parts for the Campervan. he started by making a condensation drain for the boiler vent. This stops the boiler condensation running down the side of your van. I just need to ask Jarvis to do the boiler vent cover next. I've never liked the grey one that Swift uses, and think it looks out of place.

Now Jarvis has stopped p**ping all over the floor, he's back to working hard again. Another part for the Campervan. I have 3 different adaptors for the vans LPG system. There's no one standard for filling LPG in Europe, so it's best to be prepared. They used to live in the bottom of the gas locker in a battered cardboard box. Now they are neatly mounted on the inside of the gas locker door.
This is printed in ASA carbon fibre. It's total overkill for this, as it sits inside the gas locker and doesn't see the sun. I just like this filament

3d printers like to poo, and Jarvis is no acceptation. They poo a lot, when they start printing, when they finish printing, and every time they change colour during printing. And they do it straight onto the floor behind the printer.
I had a word with Jarvis about this and he printed him self a p**p shoot and bucket. His p**p now goes for a fun ride down the shoot and into the bucket 😂.

Something new for the workshop. Say hello to Jarvis the 3D printer. He's going to be making a lot of appearances over the next few months. I have not stopped working with wood, leather and brass. These are still my favourite materials, to work with. Jarvis will help with these as well as doing things I could never do with traditional materials.

Not every project in the workshop goes according to plan. I’ve been making this simple display case from recycled wood. I’ve made dozens of these before and thought I had the process dialed in. Not this time. If it could have gone wrong it did. I even managed to smash the glass I had after I’d cut it to size. I’ll be off for some new glass soon, and get this finished off.
