We have just raised over £3000 to help community groups in Congo keep the oil companies out of the Virunga National Park. This is not only home to the largest number if mountain gorillas, but also a vast wealth of biodiversity, and if this oil is extracted then the entire planet will suffer. So huge thanks to people on the frontline. To donate https://chuffed.org/project/help-xr-universite-de-goma-keep-virunga-fossil-fuel-free

Oak framed log store with cedar shingle roof installed yesterday. Bright sunshine and great views over the South Yorkshire countryside were joyous. It has been a pleasure to build something structural after months of furniture making. Look forward to seeing it filled with logs to air dry ready for the winter.

Today am connecting with a campaign running in Southern Africa to stop the fracking and drilling of the Okavango Delta. RECON a Canadian out and gas company have a licence to extract oil from this valuable habitat, a rich site of the worlds biodiversity, but as importantly home to the indigenous San Peoples. The San are a foraging community, and destruction of millions of acres of their homeland will be an act of genocide. If this project continues it will allow extraction of oil, equivalent to 1/6th of the remaining carbon budget, and be an act of gross genocide and Ecocide. In the run up to the G7 and COP26 we have to demand an end to greenwashing, false solutions, and using those least responsible for the Climate and Ecological Emergency to pay the price for greed and overconsumption. stands for a sustainable planet and promoting just solutions to the problems we face. , , .digital

Sometimes it is necessary to consider why it is I am a crafts person. It is not just the love of the skills that I have learned and continue to learn. It is as much about an approach to building a fairer and more equal world. We have left behind so many things that built a small number of things that last. Instead we strive for a large number of things that won’t last. This latter pursuit is costing the worlds resources way beyond the means of sustainability. It is not just good enough to try and work in the way I would hope more people will. So I am also active in the social and climate justice movement. Sometimes the big picture impacts us locally. Just between my home and workshop hundreds of acres have been fenced off and cleared of all life to build a massive distribution hub for Hermes. 3.8 million parcels per day to be sent out on 500+ lorries each day. That is a huge challenge - so today, in support of the local community, and to mark the 89th Anniversary of the Kinder Mass Trespass, which won is the national parks, I Trespassed on the land that has been taken and planted an apple tree, a symbol of nature health and our connection to the planet. This symbolic act is to ask the perpetrators of this damage to pay something back. So craft is more than just making for it is a vision for a better future

I installed this room divider at the start of the week. European oak doors, frame, architrave and skirting. They were pretty large doors at 1050mm per leaf, but hung on 4 stainless steel ball bearing hinges and that seemed irrelevant.

I have wanted to design a simple cupboard door pull fir a while. I didn’t just want a hole to put your finger through, and with 18mm ply doors it did not feel easy. I therefore spent yesterday experimenting with different methods and I am really delighted by the results.

Our Story

CIDA Wood Design - pronounced Cider not Cedar - it is confusing but it combines my name, Ci, and some of my surname, Davis. I know it is confusing - but the pattern of the letters and not wanting to be Ci Davis Carpenter etc, made it feel right. However, the first thing I have to do is explain how to pronounce it. That is not good business sense I know, but then I have to explain how to pronounce my name also: Ci as in Sigh not See or Chee.

The thing that I hope not to have to explain too much is what I do. I make things which look, feel, perhaps smell, beautiful in wood. This can be your front door in timeless English Oak, or it can be a piece of furniture such as a dining table, it could be a kitchen, or maybe a unique wooden light, and it can even be a small gift item such as a chopping board or placemat. Everything that I make is considered and I hope that it will be something that you will enjoy for many years.

My work is usually made to order and to designs discussed with my clients. However, I have a small showroom at my workshop now, and here there are always some furniture items to see. You can feel the quality of the wood and the craftsmanship that I offer. A visit to my workshop also offers the opportunity to discuss a project with me.

Please pop back to this page or my website to see updates on my work and please feel free to contact me by email, message or phone.
