Godfrey's Ear. Vintage furniture: restyled, reloved

Godfrey's Ear. Vintage furniture: restyled, reloved Restyled vintage furniture for sale and commissions, furniture paint and painting workshops Talking of landfill, this is really where it all started for me.

I just want to let you know a little bit little about me, what I do and why it is so important to me. I'm a Derbyshire girl, who spent many years working in the finance industry, both locally in Derby and Nottingham, but I also spent almost 20 years living and working in London before returning to my home turf. My little business is all about saving good quality and serviceable furniture from bein

g destroyed and taken to landfill. As a child I would visit my grandparents who lived on a lane that led to what we in those days we called a tip. My father and I would go down there and wander round to see what discarded treasures we might find, I remember once finding a doll, I rescued her, bathed her and gave her some new clothes. By the age of 5 I had the bug! Funny really because down said lane there was a rifle range and I used to go in search of spent bullets in the sand, it's a wonder I didn't try and join the army as well! Today you will be pleased to know that area is a Wetland Reserve, home to many birds and otters. It's an alarming fact that in Great Britain alone over 300,000 tons (22 million items) of reusable furniture are thrown away every single year! I feel so lucky to have trained in Interior Design at KLC in Chelsea. This opportunity arose after I was made redundant, and so I used the money I had from that to fund my studies. I started on a journey to create the designer look using second hand unloved furniture which in time led me into my furniture painting world of Godfrey’s Ear. I have been taught and mentored by some fantastic people in the painting world. I have been restyling vintage furniture now for almost 10 years. I love to transform my pieces from dowdy to desirable, so they can once again take pride of place in the home. People love a taste of designer unique, but don't always have the high-end budget that type of furniture requires. By choosing upcycled furniture you can have a good quality piece of furniture. Save the planet, save your pocket! What do I do? I paint and restyle quality pieces of furniture, creating beautiful pieces to suit today's homes using low VOC, eco-friendly products. I like to incorporate colour and pattern into my pieces: this could be a beautiful wallpaper or a fabulous stencil. I love dark neutrals and earth tones, but I will sometimes add a pop of vibrant colour for that surprise twist. I offer a bespoke commission service. You may have a piece of furniture that has been handed down to you, or a piece that is no longer quite on-trend. Why part with it when it can be restyled for you to give it a new lease of life. Old is the new new! I run painting workshops in my studio at Brailsford. Set in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, the studio is light-filled and it even has a balcony! It makes for a relaxing, informal and friendly environment to brush up on your painting skills. I have a great range of furniture paints and decorative products. I love them and I am sure you will too. So, if you want to have a go at your very own upcycling, crafting or decorating project, I have got you covered. I am always happy to help if you get stuck or need some advice. Please do feel free to call or message me. Such fun with Milk Paint

A few of you have asked how I created this chippy look on the demi-lune table I posted earlier in the week.

Honestly, it was so easy, the hardest part was choosing which colours to use.

For this piece, I selected colours that would complement the terrazzo effect top. Just wait till you see me doing that, I was like a pig in muck🐷

Base colours

⭐️Hotel Robe - white
⭐️Casa Rosa - coral
⭐️Velvet Palm - turquiouse

Top Colour

⭐️Terrarium - dark teal green

I mixed each Milk Paint Powder with water, roughly a 50/50 mix for the base colours. I then randomly applied these three colours over the skirt and legs using a chip brush. This was so easy, I wasn't looking for a perfect blend, just a coverage of contrasting colours.

I left the piece to dry for 30 minutes, I then applied a coat of Fusion Beeswax all over the painted area using a lint-free cloth.

For the top coat I went for a slightly thicker consistency and to be honest I wasn't bothered about having a few lumps in the paint either, because this just added to the overall aged look I wanted to achieve.

This time I painted the underneath of the table as well and painted over all of the base coat. I then used a hairdryer to dry the paint causing it to crackle and chip. This process is so easy, the paint does all the ageing for you so you don't have to agonise and think about how to create an authentic aged chippy look.

I left the piece until the following day, then applied another coat of wax, but this time I mixed it with some brown ageing powders to add more texture and grunge, you can't beat a bit of grunge I say.

Next up I'll show you how I did the top.
