🌍 World Environment Day: Why Sustainability Matters to Us

The 5th June is World Environment Day and our Environment & Community Working Group ran a competition, asking colleagues: “Why is being more sustainable important to you?”

We invited everyone to share how they’re making environmentally conscious choices - at home, at work, or both. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to meaningful change.

This year’s theme, ‘Climate Action’, encourages conversations about climate change, global warming, and the positive steps we can all take in our daily lives.

🏆 Our Winner: Teri
Teri shared a thoughtful reminder that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated - small, everyday choices add up. Her message centred on the classic mantra: reduce, reuse, recycle.

Here are some of the simple actions she highlighted:

💧 Reusable water bottles instead of single‑use plastic

🛋️ Upcycling furniture (shout‑out to Weird & Wonderful in Louth!)

👚 Donating unwanted clothes and household items to charity shops

🍴 Reducing food waste by using leftovers for lunch

🥕 Supporting local businesses to cut down on transport emissions

♻️ Recycling household waste properly

🌷 Planting bee‑friendly flowers and plants 🐝

Teri also reflected on the importance of protecting the natural world, having seen incredible places like the Great Barrier Reef. As David Attenborough said, “the natural world is the greatest source of excitement, visual beauty and the source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

✅ A defibrillator is only rescue‑ready if its pads are in date.

Take one minute today to check the expiry date - expired pads mean your defib can’t be used when it matters most.

🚨 28.4% of social housing residents are evacuation impaired.

In this FireWatch discussion, Elspeth Grant shares why this matters - and why the coroner’s question, “You knew they were disabled… what did you do?” should be a wake‑up call for everyone involved in housing safety.

Grenfell showed us the human cost of inadequate planning.

🌍 Some of our Environment & Community Working Group members headed over to the People Planet Pint event in Lincoln yesterday evening - a great opportunity to connect with others passionate about sustainability and community action.

Lucy, Toni and Rik joined open conversations with attendees who are driving positive change locally.

Hosted by Reuseabox and Stokes, the session focused on Community Action, bringing together people keen to get involved and make a difference.

A valuable evening of learning, discussion and inspiration - and we’re excited to bring that energy back into our own projects.👏🏼

🎊 What a fantastic way to wrap up the year! 🎊

On Saturday we brought the Safelincs team, family and friends together for an afternoon packed with good food, great music and plenty of laughs.

We enjoyed fresh AUGUSTINO Ltd, live music from Klout, ice cream from Miss Whippy - Sutton on Sea, and drinks served by Bar and Away - Mobile Bars - the perfect mix for a relaxed, feel‑good celebration.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so memorable.

Here’s to more moments like this with our amazing team.
