🌍 World Environment Day: Why Sustainability Matters to Us
The 5th June is World Environment Day and our Environment & Community Working Group ran a competition, asking colleagues: “Why is being more sustainable important to you?”
We invited everyone to share how they’re making environmentally conscious choices - at home, at work, or both. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to meaningful change.
This year’s theme, ‘Climate Action’, encourages conversations about climate change, global warming, and the positive steps we can all take in our daily lives.
🏆 Our Winner: Teri
Teri shared a thoughtful reminder that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated - small, everyday choices add up. Her message centred on the classic mantra: reduce, reuse, recycle.
Here are some of the simple actions she highlighted:
💧 Reusable water bottles instead of single‑use plastic
🛋️ Upcycling furniture (shout‑out to Weird & Wonderful in Louth!)
👚 Donating unwanted clothes and household items to charity shops
🍴 Reducing food waste by using leftovers for lunch
🥕 Supporting local businesses to cut down on transport emissions
♻️ Recycling household waste properly
🌷 Planting bee‑friendly flowers and plants 🐝
Teri also reflected on the importance of protecting the natural world, having seen incredible places like the Great Barrier Reef. As David Attenborough said, “the natural world is the greatest source of excitement, visual beauty and the source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”
