Le verger est très belle.
Our orchard. So beautiful.
Orderly rows of fruit trees. Each to ripen its offering in different months.
Reclaimed from our bigger field from its occupants, les Charolais blanche cattle.
A decade in the making.
Here she rises!
That summer long ago when I picked 9 demi-tiege (grafted half size) fruitiers and Monsieur Claude gave me a 10th.
The French love balance. I adore my, not as straight as the others, Veronique plum. She is prospering!
Sitting. Smiling. I think back to when. M. Claude, my then 74 year old buddy did everything from deliver the wood on the back of his sweet antique tractor, to plant trees for me, to share with me home made alcool de Mirabelle and whatever was overflowing in season in his potager! Special memories of veggie patch bounty, boozy gifts and days working in the field together.
But I digress. The trees! The months of cueillette - of picking!
Starting May with not one but TWO types of cherries. Tricky to birth due to erratic frosts. Tricky to grab before the birds delight their little tummies. I don’t mind sharing!
Next, we wait with baited breath for August and September and their joint choruses of the plums!
Les pruniers!
The show stoppers!
So many plums to choose from! Response? Plant as many as possible! Bien sur!
My favs? If a mother can have favs?
The quetsche.
Under-sung local due to it’s often aged, straggly form. Juice packed golden flesh. Dark dark purple skin. Skin a little tougher than it’s more delicate neighbour ..
The Mirabelle.
She is the definition of small yet perfectly formed. A little shy of golf ball size. Golden skin, golden flesh. Like eating chocolate a dear, and gorging, friend once commented. No judgement there. They are stunning!
We gather these beauties by the bowl full.
Sit them on the table to eat in passing.
Plan meals to end tarts with.
Make confiture to gift, to share, to delight ourselves.
Into the store cupboard for when the months are dark. And even better, next year when you arrive out of season and the trees are bare of fresh offerings.
