18th century country farmhouse, Champagne Burgundy, France You will find us in the Champagne-Bourgogne borders. Enjoying the good life, in any season. How did we two Aussies end up with a home in France? oh my .. xx

Let alone in the little known Haute-Marne? It’s a dream really! Imagine an impossibly sunny Saturday morning in June, with us in our hire car navigating through increasingly smaller, and more isolated roads to find what will soon be our new home. As towns are left behind and lanes appear, we are quietly getting more and more excited at the approach of our destination. We have been hunting for over

two years with little success and many dislocated expectations up to now, so still trying to keep a poker face. As heartbeats increase, we cross the tiny bridge into the hameau and make a sharp right at the rose-covered stone walls of the manoir that links our property. The small gravel lane passes chickens and ends in a massive tilleul tree amid green, green grass. Ahead, more green on a hillside bare except for grazing white Charolais cattle and a smattering of prune and walnut trees. Above, it is topped with thick woods. Poker is forgotten as our eyes now turn to what will be our very own slice of France .. the farmhouse walls are mobbed with roses of blood red and mixed shades of pink. Wisteria tumbles in a purple haze above. A grape vine we later learn is 100 years old climbs up, up and around the stone façade. We are in love before we even step inside to find décor to dream of .. downstairs with stone floors worn smooth by centuries of feet, light pouring in through windows thrown wide to let in bumble bees and petals, antique yet comfy furniture, soft furnishings of heavy linen, not one but three ensuite bedrooms with satisfyingly modern fittings and more and more .. we are in heaven! We grabbed and hold this beautiful property in our hearts. May you also experience the joy it gives us when you visit! Bienvenue!

Le verger est très belle.
Our orchard. So beautiful.

Orderly rows of fruit trees. Each to ripen its offering in different months.

Reclaimed from our bigger field from its occupants, les Charolais blanche cattle.

A decade in the making.

Here she rises!

That summer long ago when I picked 9 demi-tiege (grafted half size) fruitiers and Monsieur Claude gave me a 10th.

The French love balance. I adore my, not as straight as the others, Veronique plum. She is prospering!

Sitting. Smiling. I think back to when. M. Claude, my then 74 year old buddy did everything from deliver the wood on the back of his sweet antique tractor, to plant trees for me, to share with me home made alcool de Mirabelle and whatever was overflowing in season in his potager! Special memories of veggie patch bounty, boozy gifts and days working in the field together.

But I digress. The trees! The months of cueillette - of picking!

Starting May with not one but TWO types of cherries. Tricky to birth due to erratic frosts. Tricky to grab before the birds delight their little tummies. I don’t mind sharing!

Next, we wait with baited breath for August and September and their joint choruses of the plums!

Les pruniers!

The show stoppers!

So many plums to choose from! Response? Plant as many as possible! Bien sur!

My favs? If a mother can have favs?

The quetsche.

Under-sung local due to it’s often aged, straggly form. Juice packed golden flesh. Dark dark purple skin. Skin a little tougher than it’s more delicate neighbour ..

The Mirabelle.

She is the definition of small yet perfectly formed. A little shy of golf ball size. Golden skin, golden flesh. Like eating chocolate a dear, and gorging, friend once commented. No judgement there. They are stunning!

We gather these beauties by the bowl full.

Sit them on the table to eat in passing.
Plan meals to end tarts with.
Make confiture to gift, to share, to delight ourselves.

Into the store cupboard for when the months are dark. And even better, next year when you arrive out of season and the trees are bare of fresh offerings.

A day trip to Dijon. Always special. 😊
