[ The right choice ] 😉

❓There are lots of references and you can't manage to choose the right schoolbag for your child?

💡 Kiwip is here to advise you! 💡

We know that choosing can be a real headache for you... Even if your child chooses his bag based on aesthetics, there are other factors to consider though!

❓Why is the choice important?
It will be used throughout the school year! An unsuitable schoolbag can compromise your child's health by generating back pain and in the long term deformities.

❓But how to choose?
The main thing is that it is easy to handle, adapted to the age, morphology and level of education. You will have a lot of choice on patterns and shapes. However, the choice should not only be based on the aesthetic aspect.

The schoolbag should :
➡️ Not be wider than your child's shoulders
➡️ Be adapted to the child's morphology so that he feels comfortable carrying it, that there is no discomfort and that the weight of his belongings is well distributed.
➡️ Be made of a fairly rigid material so that it does not wear out quickly
➡️ Have wide, padded shoulder straps for comfort and good support because all the weight of the schoolbag weighs directly on the shoulders.

🚨 For the sake of your child, we recommend that you check the capacity of the bag often to ensure that it is not too heavy. As a reminder, once filled, the schoolbag should not weigh more than 10% of the child's weight!

[School supply tips ] 📝🖋📐

As soon as the school year ends, schools provide a list of supplies for the following year. ❓ Didn't you get yours? We invite you to find it on the city hall website now or ask the school management for it!

But once you have it... ❓ How to organise these purchases properly?

➡️ Make a first sorting in your child's belongings by distinguishing :
- What is in good condition
- What can no longer be used
- Isolate scissors, rulers, compasses, which will always be used again
- Every 6 months, take a few minutes to sort out felt-tips, pencils, pens and highlighters and don't hesitate to throw them away

➡️ Buy boxes for each type of supply/theme. Classify:
Gender neutral and theme neutral supplies: pens, scissors, glue, ruler...
Sheets, separating single from double and small from large;
Unused folders and binders and new notebooks.

➡️ Donate to associations:❓ Did you know? Schools collect and associations collect school supplies to redistribute them to families in need. Some unused supplies can be used by others, so don't hesitate to make a gesture!

➡️ Resell school books: Book fairs are also organised, allowing you to get rid of your textbooks in good condition, but also to buy the following year's books at a lower cost.

How to limit the cost of purchases for families?
- Group purchasing actions in conjunction with parents' associations: sell "school kit".
- Staggered purchases: The purchase of supplies can be done in several parts over the year according to the child's needs
- Clearance shops: They often offer supplies in sets. Buying in sets means lower prices. From school bags to pens to clothes, these shops always offer a wide range of products.
- Second hand: Parents can find supplies close to home. In addition to being inexpensive, you are also doing something for the planet.

❓ What about you? Have you already done your school supplies shopping or are you going to do it last minute? Tell us in the comments section! 😜

[ Sunburn ] 🌞🚨

Here's our reminder of the day! Skin cancers occur in adulthood and can be caused by repeated exposure to the sun and also from childhood sunburns!

🚨By protecting your child from the sun's harmful rays, you are sparing their eyes, skin and immune system!🚨

❓First of all, what are the symptoms of sunburn?
➡️ Redness of the skin accompanied by a feeling of heat and pain
➡️ Blisters that form after a few hours or days.
➡️ Headache and fever

❓What to do if your child gets a sunburn?
➡️ Put him in the shade and make sure he is not exposed to the sun again until it heals
➡️ Remember to make him drink a lot of water
➡️ Place him in a warm shower or bath and then apply warm compresses several times a day
➡️ Apply an unscented moisturizer (e.g., aloe vera gel, CeraVe®, Cutibase®) to his skin as soon as he gets out of the bath to soothe him

❓In what condition should a doctor be consulted?
➡️ Blisters on the body/ discoloured skin
➡️ Dizziness/fainting, Chills/fever
➡️ Rapid breathing
➡️ Eye pain, vision problems
➡️ Nausea/vomiting

PSSSST... Don't forget to apply sunscreen every 2 hours on future exposures, including overcast days! 💡

[ Better safe than hurt ! ] 🧴🧑🏻⚕️⛱

It's THAT time of the year! Summer, the sun... tanning, swimming...

Unfortunately, good weather doesn't come without precautions!

❓Did you know?
Skin cancer is on the rise and the main cause is exposure to ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB). The sun can be harmful for your child because his skin is sensitive, very thin and poorly pigmented. It is therefore imperative to protect it!

Time of exposure, suitable sun cream, anti-UV clothing... Kiwip tells you all the advice to protect your child this summer to stay safe !

❓ At what time of the day is the sun strongest?
The sun is strongest from 11am to 2pm. We recommend that you keep your child in the shade as much as possible during these times, making sure to cover him well to avoid sunburn!

❓What are the criteria for a good sun cream?
➡️ Choose a UVA and UVB sun cream and lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.
➡️ Favour cream sunscreens as applying a spray-on sunscreen in windy conditions can be difficult, and its effectiveness may be reduced.
➡️ If your child is taking medication, ask their doctor or a pharmacist if a higher SPF is recommended, as some medications can make the skin more sensitive to the sun.

❓When should sunscreen be applied?
➡️ With a physical screen, your child can go outside immediately after applying sunscreen.
➡️ Apply it to your child every 2 hours. If he gets out of the water or sweats a lot, reapply the cream.

🚨 We remind you that sunscreen is not the only way to prevent sun-related risks🚨

Although sunscreen helps us to protect ourselves, it is UV protective clothing and shade that offer the best protection.

Unfortunately the sun does not only damages the skin but also the eyes. It is therefore advisable to protect them by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to block the ultraviolet rays. Remember that the glasses must be marked "UV 400" or "100% UV protection" to be effective!

❓What brand of sunscreen do you recommend? Share it by commenting below the post!

[ Ideas of family activities ] ⚽️🏈🍕

❓You want to have fun together but you are running out of ideas and don't know what to do for activities?

During their development, children need to be active, to think and learn. So we've put together some ideas to keep you busy ! 😜

➡️ For children under 6 years old:
At this young age, a child shows a lot of imagination in play. You should therefore let him invent scenarios and participate with disguises if he wishes and dive into the adventure with him!
This one should also be interested in manual activities, which leaves him more freedom to do colouring or cutting, or puzzles, which can keep him busy and exercise his brain!

➡️ For children aged 6 to 9:
In September, he will be at primary school and will spend a large part of his days there. We therefore invite you to help him to spend some time! Go and play outside with him, organise a picnic and take a ball or a bike (scooter, rollerblade...).
If the weather is not good, prepare an apple pie or cookies together. He is now old enough to understand that he has to be careful in the kitchen.

➡️ For children aged 9 to 12
Children's attention gets easier with time. So you can start playing board games without the risk of him getting bored too quickly. On the contrary, they will enjoy it and remember it!
Also, there are fun and educational games on the computer as well as on the mobile. It may be worthwhile to take a look at them and offer some to your child for a maximum of one hour so that you can control their screen time. Similarly, cartoons or certain programmes may be suitable for your child's development.

❓Do you have other ideas of activities to keep a child occupied? Don't hesitate to share them with us in the comments, it will certainly inspire parents! 😉

[ Good or bad? ] 🍦🍧

❓The ice cream is quite tempting... But should you give in? Can your kid eat some every day?

If your child is exercising during the day, it's okay to eat them once a day. However, make sure that he eats it just after a meal because with an empty stomach it suddenly brings too much sugar to the body, produces a surplus of insulin and encourages the storage of fat. This will not be the case if you give it to him at the end of the meal because it is associated with other nutrients.

❓What if he asks for ice cream/sorbet at teatime snack instead?
Although it is sometimes complicated, we advise you to refuse him by explaining carefully the reasons ( do not hesitate to refer to the paragraph above).
It is preferable to offer your child products with calcium such as yogurts and/or something with no added sugar such as a fruit. Thus, make sure that your child has a good supply of alimentary fiber and therefore hydrates his body well!😉

🚨 Beware! Going to two, then three ice creams is not without risks! 🚨

❓So which products should you choose?
Try to choose natural products, without colorants and/or additives, gelling agents, palm oil or glycerine... Also remember to take the ones less loaded with sugar and saturated fats!

If you know of any ice cream brands to recommend to other parents, tell us in the comments 😜

[ The best protection is prevention! ] 🤕🩹

Small summer injuries are recurrent and inevitable! The slightest infection could ruin your holiday, especially as children are particularly sensitive to these little incidents. Here's all the info Kiwip has gathered that will help you treat them.

1️⃣ Insect bites:
The child is an easy prey for small insects. Right after the bite, pimples may appear, and itch him at the risk of making the lesions harden. It is recommended to apply :
an antiseptic
a soothing ointment.

2️⃣ Sunburn:
It should be kept in mind that children's skin is fragile and its future depends on the treatment it has had. Several studies have shown that sunburn before the age of 20 increases the risk of skin cancer! To avoid this, you should :
Apply sun cream to the child's entire body every hour
Apply pure aloe vera, for its soothing and healing properties
In case of a burn, place a bandage to discourage the urge to scratch

3️⃣ Wasp or bee stings:
To treat them, here are the solutions:
Remove the stinger of the insect with tweezers without putting pressure on the venom sac
Apply a compress soaked in cold water and then disinfect with an antiseptic.

4️⃣ Cuts:
Initially, the wound should be cleaned to remove dirt lodged inside the skin but also :
Use saline solution
Disinfect the wound
Apply a 100% water-resistant adhesive dressing to the wound.

5️⃣ Jellyfish stings:
To heal them, the solution is to
Thoroughly rinse the wound with sea water (not fresh water, which might activate the jellyfish's venom).
Or rinse with white vinegar

Now you know how to manage your walking pharmacy in case of injuries! 😁

[ Tips of the day ] 📝😇

❓Did you know?
As parents you are the primary role model for teaching your children social rules. They need to interact with the world. Unfortunately, sometimes they can be shy and struggle to connect with other children.

Don't hesitate to encourage your child to express themselves while making sure to teach them politeness, show them why it's important to share, care about their peers' needs and feelings!

❓How can you help your child make positive connections with others?

To help him, you can encourage him to:
➡️ Participate in drawing, drama, singing, music
➡️ Invite a classmate to come to the house
➡️ Play team sports to build friendships
➡️ Asking how his day was with his friends and how his friends are doing

💡To understand him better and maybe unblock him from certain situations, here is a book you can read :

[ Healthy habits for a healthy summer ] 👙😜

❓Is your appetite smaller when it is getting very hot?
Know that it is important not to miss meals and to drink, favouring foods/drinks that refreshes.

❓So...? What to eat/don't eat and drink/don't drink when it's hot?

Here are some rules and principles to follow for the sake of your child:
➡️ Offer your child ambient temperature water to drink every hour, without waiting for him to show his thirst. Water is perfect because it does not stimulate thirst and does not create intestinal discomfort, unlike sodas.

➡️ Make complete salads, mixing raw and cooked vegetables, starchy foods, proteins. These are real energy shots, which are super quick to prepare.

➡️ Choose fish over red meat as meat requires more energy to digest.

➡️ Invite him to consume dairy products: yoghurts or fromage blanc, to complete the forgotten contributions (proteins, calcium).

➡️ Offer him fresh fruit (melon, watermelon, strawberry, peach)

➡️ Avoid cooking fried foods which are full of salt that make you thirsty and promote dehydration and are greasy.

➡️ Chillies, chilli, paprika are not welcome! They can upset your digestive system, but they also make you very thirsty and dehydrated

Now you have the basics for a safe and healthy diet to survive the heat!

[ Drowning prevention ] 🌊🚨

❓Did you know? Every year, more than 1,000 people are registered in emergency rooms due to drowning. But these are mostly preventable.

Nutrition, warning signs, dry drowning or simple suggestions... here are some tips for accident-free swimming!

❓What tips do you have for children?
➡️ Always keep an eye on your children and this even if they are just at the water's edge and/or equipped with armbands.
➡️ Equip them, if they do not yet know how to swim well, with armbands that are CE marked and comply with the NF 13138-1 standard. These should be adapted to their size, age and weight.
➡️ Teach them to swim as soon as possible and get them used to the aquatic environment.

🚨 We remind you that it only takes 20 cm of water for a child, without supervision, to drown 🚨

❓What is dry drowning and what to do in case of an accident?
It occurs out of water a few hours to a few days after swimming and is caused by immersion in a liquid. Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing or wheezing, stomach ache accompanied by fever and vomiting.

🚨 If after drinking the cup or risking drowning, stomach ache, fever and intense drowsiness occur, call the emergency services (999 or 111) to listen to their advice and specify what happened in the water 🚨

❓How to make your pool safe?
➡️ Equip it with a safety device with barriers, a pool enclosure or covers that prevent access to the pool
➡️ Install perimeter sound alarms
➡️ Place a pole, a buoy near the pool to limit the risks
➡️ Take out any floating objects such as buoys, fries or inflatable objects and put the safety device back on. If possible, remove the ladder from the pool to secure access after you have stopped your activities in the water.

[ The hat that saves lives ] 🧢☀️

❓Did you know? Your child's skin is sensitive and vulnerable, whether it is matte or not.

To avoid dehydration, sunstroke, sunburn and eye exposure, cover your child with long clothes but above all... make him wear a hat !
Know that the pigmentary system of his skin is developed but not without risk, because the damage of the sun weakens the skin in the long term.

❓Which hat choose?
Go for the wide-brimmed, anti-uv hat. This way, rest assured, it will shade her face and, preferably, her neck.

❓What material should it be made of?
Whether it's denim, cotton, or canvas, the material should be thick enough to withstand the sun and sea. Your child will then be protected with a non-rusty headgear!

❓How to determine the perfect size?
Using a sewing tape measure, wrap your child's head above his ears, across his forehead, and at the bulkiest back of his skull. You can also go to the Okaïdi website, where you can consult a size guide!
.....pSSSSSSt .........! Don't forget the sun cream! Preferably a special waterproof cream for children with a minimum filter of 50. Check the manufacturer's markings to see if it protects against UVA and UVB rays and also check that the product has been dermatologically tested!
