What if every radio already in the field could start watching for threats in the electromagnetic environment automatically, invisibly, without any extra hardware?

That is exactly what Bittium and Finnish AI specialist MarshallAI have built together.

Through a software upgrade, Bittium's tactical radios now scan the spectrum, detect unknown signals, and alert soldiers to unusual activity around them, all while continuing to communicate normally. The AI processing happens entirely on the device. Nothing leaves the unit. No cloud, no central server, no extra equipment for soldiers to carry.

The idea behind it is straightforward. Traditional electronic warfare systems are large, expensive and few in number. They are easy to target. A distributed network of AI-enabled radios spread across the whole force is not. The sensors are everywhere, and they look just like ordinary communications equipment.

Soldiers do not need to learn anything new. The system works in the background. Bittium's own benchmark: simple enough for a six-month conscript to use.

Bittium acquired a 24.9 % stake in MarshallAI in September 2025, and the two companies are now building this technology across Bittium's full product range.

Bittium closes software maintenance deal for Estonian Defence Forces’ tactical communications system.

We continue to support the Estonian Defence Forces’ tactical communications system based on the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system and Bittium Tough VoIP™ products. The services are delivered under a Framework Agreement between Bittium’s Estonian partner, who acts as the system integrator, and the Estonian Defence Forces, covering the period from 2026 to 2030.

In modern communications systems, software plays a central role. Through software maintenance services, we ensure that the system remains up to date against evolving operational requirements and emerging threats. Regular updates and performance enhancements enable the Estonian Defence Forces to maintain mission readiness and maximize the lifecycle value of the system.
