I'm excited to be heading to Tokyo next week to present Tansu, the newest addition to my Birch Forest collection.

Inspired by traditional Japanese furniture and crafted from Finnish birch and natural birch bark, Tansu combines practical function with timeless design. The sliding birch bark doors make every piece unique, showcasing the beautiful patterns created by nature.

All pieces are designed and handcrafted in my countryside workshop in Karkkila, Finland, where nature continues to inspire my work every day.

Tansu - A Quiet Balance of Craft and Function

‘Tansu’ combines minimal design with everyday practicality. The beauty of natural birch bark takes center stage, bringing warmth, texture, and a quiet Nordic character to the furniture. Designed to function both as a sideboard and a bench, Tansu adapts easily to different spaces and needs.

Sliding doors on both sides make the piece especially versatile and space-efficient. Thanks to the double-sided design, Tansu works beautifully as a room divider, creating storage and structure while remaining visually light from every angle.

Crafted from solid birch with carefully made finger-joint corner connections, the cabinet reflects lasting woodworking quality and durability. The birch bark sliding doors add a unique natural surface, making each piece distinctive.

The handle details are inspired by traditional Japanese fittings, adding a refined and subtle finishing touch to the clean overall form.

Forest Glow Lights on Display

A set of Tulipuro's Forest Glow lights is currently on display at the Craft Museum of Finland as part of the exhibition Curly Birch – The Tree Pressed by the Devil.

Curly birch is a unique variation of silver birch, known for its strength, durability, and striking visual patterns. Its story combines folklore, rare genetics, scientific research, and design potential.

This exhibition explores the cultural and ecological significance of one of Finland’s most valued materials, bringing together experts from across design, research, and craftsmanship.

Craft in Transition - From Forest to Tokyo

I am currently developing experimental furniture for the NEXT exhibition at Interior Lifestyle Tokyo in June 2026.

This project is inspired by traditional Japanese tansu storage furniture: modular, mobile pieces designed for changing living situations.

The piece I’m building reinterprets these principles through my own design language. It will take the form of a compact, low sideboard that can also function as a bench and is easy to move.

This work explores the intersection of Japanese tradition and Finnish woodworking, combining functionality with a sustainable approach to materials.
