📄🇪🇸The padrón certificate ‘Certificado de Empadronamiento’ is the certificate issued once you register on the official municipal register in Spain. The municipal register records the names and addresses of all residents living within a specific town or city.

The certificate itself is valid for up to 3 months for official procedures.

If you move you must register your new address straight away with a new padrón. 🏡

Your registration should be renewed every 2 or 5 years to avoid removal.

🇪🇺EU & Family members
Every 5 years.
🌏Non-EU citizens
Every 2 years, those with temporary residence.
Every 5 years, those who hold a permanent or long term residence card.

📆The City Council may send a notification to your home address before the renewal but just in case keep a calendar reminder as it is your responsibility.

ℹ️The municipal register or census contains the number of inhabitants of a municipality and is of great importance since the greater the number of registered residents, the greater the amount of funds that the City Council receives for municipal infrastructure and services.

ℹ️The Non Lucrative Visa continues to be the most popular Visa for retired and non working British Nationals moving to Spain. Applications can be made in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Since the start of the year we have seen some improvements in the turnaround times from application submission to receiving the Visa, although the times do still vary, from only a few days to several weeks. The next few months we expect to see applications increase as many will be aiming to submit theirs before the notorious slow processing months of July and August. In the previous 5 years we have seen the longest delays for many that have applied over these summer months.

Appointments are issued during the fingerprint appointment.

ℹ️ After attending your tie fingerprints appointment you will need to return between usually 30-45 days to collect your card. On the reguardo (the receipt) issued, you can find your lote number. You need to check the lote has arrived before collecting the card. The format appears like YYYY/### (eg Autorizacíon temporal 2026/023). It represents which batch of cards yours will be printed and delivered in. In the example the lote would be 023. Each office publishes the batch number they are on once a new batch arrives.

ℹ️Don’t forget to take your ‘resguardo’, passport and old tie if you have one. Appointments may not be required in all offices so please check first on your resguardo or with our office for confirmation of this. If you are waiting in an area not mentioned above let us know.

📆A date for the calendar!

The ‘declaration de la renta’ is the personal income tax return in Spain. It is completed by filing the modelo 100 declaration form. All Spanish residents are expected to declare the income that they receive. This includes income from outside of Spain. There are some allowances and exceptions, so it is important to understand exactly what is and what isn’t required to avoid any tax debts and penalties.

ℹ️The Spanish tax year runs from January 1st until the 31 December. Declarations should be filed by the 30 June of the following year.
