Thank you to all of our very talented and creative woodturners! We couldnt do this without you!🩶

Our community and the Crushgrind team loves the design and especially the storytelling behind the design of entry 013!
How Tobias has used the charisticary of the wood to artistically describe and combine it with the essentials of salt and pepper, we think is lovely and very well thought out.
There truly is a harmony of opposites! And as you he says, salt and pepper are truly diverse tastemakers.

"This one is a mill set made out of cherry. As I always try to give away pairs of mills I like to differentiate them. For example by creating different height, shape or colour. For this one I used a laser to engrave the letters P for pepper and S for Salt on the head. It also works for the german words Pfeffer (pepper) and Salz (salt).”

"Last year I took part at the Crushgrind Crafts Award with a mill set I made for my girlfriend. Although we both love the set dearly and use it every day, we realized on our camping trips, that the set was a bit big for camping purposes (we have not quite reached this stage of glamping yet). As we both really don’t want to do without freshly ground pepper, I decided to make another, smaller mill with the Crushgrind Mini mechanism, that we can take with us on our trips (so maybe we actually did reach the glamping stage).
This mill now is dedicated to Fluse, our cat, whose name translates to “fluff of dust”. Fluse is characterized not only by her grey fur – hence the name – but also by being about the smallest grown cat I have ever met. So although sadly Fluse, the cat, can’t join us on our camping trips, we now always have her with us by taking Fluse, the tiny pepper mill."

"The spice mills from Hoizart are not just kitchen helpers; they are small masterpieces that enrich your dishes in a special way. Imagine gently turning the mill to release the scent of freshly ground pepper or aromatic herbs in your kitchen while golden sunlight pours through the window. Each time you hold one of our mills, you can feel the love that goes into every detail."

"It has been an enjoyable and pleasant experience making this entry for the Crushgrind Salt and Pepper woodturners annual competition.
At 87 yrs of age, I am a retired Company Manager, but I have had a lifelong passion for making things in wood. I have renovated and restored two houses. I have also built three new homes from the ground up. I have built and installed three kitchens to use in the new houses. This included spray painting the cupboard doors. As an alternative I have also constructed a fifteen-foot plywood runabout using native Kauri timber for framing and stringers. The one thing missing from the above is 'woodturning'.
In 2012, I joined the South Auckland Woodturners Guild. The weekly demonstrations and tuition provided the confidence to invest in the necessary equipment for upskilling my woodturning abilities. My enjoyment is derived from visualising what I want to make and then masterminding the challenge of using the available tools to complete the project.
Hence my quick uptake to meet the “Crushgrind Challenge”. Most of my entry is achieved using a “skew chisel”. I have observed in my twelve years of woodturning that the “skew” is largely regarded as a tool to be feared and respected. Often avoided when an alternative is available. Perhaps with my lifelong background “on the tools”, I like this sort of challenge and hence the inspiration to make an entry which largely makes use of the skew chisel. Each of the three faces at the upper end of each grinder are 20 mm off centre
The carry platform is fitted with internal holders for each of the salt and pepper grinders. It is important to note that even when leaning the holder over to a 45º angle this will not dislodge the grinders from the base plate. As all salt and pepper grinders are inclined to leave “visiting cards” after being placed back onto the dining table, the carry platform will also serve to accumulate any “fallout” after use.
The timber used is Pohutukawa or New Zealand Christmas Tree, and the finish is full gloss 2 pot automobile lacquer.

"🌶️ Woodturning meets passion for chili! 🌶️
Why did I choose the shape of a chilli pepper? 🌱
This artistic combines my two passions perfectly - nature and craftsmanship. 🌳🪵
While harvesting my annual home-grown chillies, I had the idea of making the matching mill from wood myself.
The wood comes from a pear tree 🌳I felled myself in 2021, which stood in the village where I grew up. The chilli is made from this tree from the base to the stalk.
The slightly charred side symbolises the warm rays of sunshine ☀️ where my real chillies normally ripen.
The whole piece of art is 28 cm high. A high-quality grinder from is installed in the upper part (19 cm). The mill stands on a hollowed-out leg, which can be used to collect salt or chilli 🧂🌶️
The tree I felt myself was turned into a real NATURSTÜCK 🤎✨"

"I would very much like to send these pieces of jewelry into the race for the Crushgrindaward 2024. These mills are made of REZYWOOD (maple veneers which are soaked in epoxy resin and then glued and pressed). The mini grinders from Crushgrind were installed 💪. The mills are made by hand with a lot of passion."
