Prevent VOC Emissions and Odor / Smell from Gas Stations (Service Stations) Underground Storage Tanks (VR1 & VR2).

Gas station underground storage tanks (USTs) are significant sources of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, releasing vapours during delivery (Stage I recovery helps), refuelling (Stage II and ORVR systems), tank breathing (temperature changes), and leaks, contributing to smog and health risks like cancer (benzene).

The local EPA (Environmental Protection Agencies) to set the agenda and requirements, which often are linked to local issues as Odor / Smell or to support their industries to become environmentally friendly and businesses are being branded more positively to potential investors and customers.

This week inspections and meetings in Malta.

Luga Airport, ENEMED, Delimara Power and not least MOBC Bunkering Terminal at Spencer Hill, Grand Harbour Valetta.

Flex Blender we installed 29 years ago, all good.

VOC Filters we installed in 2012 / 2013, to re-open MOBC with EPA approval after they had closed it in 2011.

2026 re-opening of MOBC Bunker Terminal after 5-years stand-by. Major maintenance program started Sept 2025 and scheduled to end March 2026, then ready for operation as Bunker Terminal.

Next is the LR approved VOC Filters on Bunker Tankers, to prevent any Odor / Smell from loading while discharge is covered by VOC Filters installed at MOBC.

Today morning with DAT to Rønne / Bornholm for site inspection of 3 x 8,000 m3 Storage Tanks and meeting EPA for any clarification required for approval.

VOC Abatement Filters prevent emission and Odor / Smell from the stored products.

Static electricity-related incidents at retail gasoline outlets are extremely unusual, but the potential for them to happen appears to be the highest during cool or cold and dry climate conditions.

In rare circumstances, these static related incidents have resulted in a brief flash fire occurring at the fill point. Consumers can take steps to minimize these and other potential fueling hazards by following safe refueling procedures all year long.

Most important, motorists should not get back into their vehicles during refueling. It may be a temptation to get back in the car for any number of reasons.

But the average fill-up takes only two minutes, and staying outside the vehicle will greatly minimize the likelihood of any build-up of static electricity that could be discharged at the nozzle.

A build-up of static electricity can be caused by re-entering a vehicle during fueling, particularly in cool or cold and dry weather. If the motorist then returns to the vehicle fill pipe during refueling, the static may discharge at the fill point, causing a flash fire or small sustained fire with gasoline refueling vapors.

Motorists who cannot avoid getting back into the vehicle should always first touch a metal part of the vehicle with a bare hand, such as the door, or some other metal surface, away from the fill point upon exiting the vehicle.
